Hate for new look for Green Dragon

For those making fun of the spike...

Look at the 3e Blue Dragon. Its almost exactly the same spike look, though maybe an inch farther back.

Not to drag this into the pit of silly jokes...but sometimes, an inch or two can matter. And the 3E Blue Dragon has its spike going upwards/backwards from the bridge of the snout, kinda. That green one has a spike going straight away from the tip of his snout. If it was bent a little, it would look more like a beak...and would stick out a lot less. Pardon the pun. :)

"Hate" is a strong word for anything related to something as ultimately inconsequential as D&D art. But ... I like everything in the picture except for the nose horn. I can't put my finger on exactly why. I don't care that it's not right for a green dragon or whatever, it just looks a little weird, like it's not supposed to be there.

I dunno. I don't see the whole nose spike being all that implausible or that different from the Blue Dragon.

Really, just kind of reminds me of a rhinoceros. With all the screams of 'anime' and 'unrealistic' that much of the art gets these days, having the horn there is MORE along the lines with what we see here on Earth. :p

Actually...

The blue dragon's horn is alomst rhinoceros-like, and very cool at that. It has a bulldoggish quality to its structure that I like very much (coupled with a shorter neck).

This green dragon has a "spike" (it doesn't look like a horn, more like the scales of the nostril are sharpened upwards) coming straight up from its nostril. Little nostril hornlets, like the 3e green and red have is alright. The linework on this green went a tad too far. It just doesn't... "fit" may be a word... the rest of the dragon.

Like I said earlier, end the hornlet right above the nostril and the dragon will be very good.

Thinking about it, both the Blue and the Green resemble rhinoceros, since they have two horns. The Blue just has the second, slightly farther back horn with the Green the front one, which is practically on the creature's nose.

Though I do agree that it looks more like a spike on the Green than a horn, I just don't see it as being all that bad, really.

I actually quite like it.

In fact, now that I compare them side by side, I actually really dislike the current green dragon. The colouration in the Monster Manual is actually very cool, but I hate the head - dragons shouldn't look like frill-necked crocodiles! ;)

Utter agreement here. I like the new Green Dragon.

I like the picture. There's something about the coloration and the setting that reminds me of the Erol Otus cover to the BD&D boxed set. Nice feel.
