Unless Anvuss has a good reason to think they didn't ready actions, he will full defend this round and secure his morningstar to his belt.

ooc: Just checking - are you waiting on me? Or perhaps Aethelus is about to walk in and save us all, and we're waiting for time to sync up?

*Anvuss takes a defensive stance, and as he begins to secure his morningstar, both of them fire, but with the combination of being prone, behind the pillar, and defending, both shots miss.*

*They continue to hold their fire.*

I had thought they were readying to fire upon spellcasting, but I didn't cast any spells and they fired anyway. Perhaps they are simply waiting for an action at all? What can I do to provoke them before I start reading the scroll?

ooc: Have to go to work. Will finish post soon.

Anvuss will ready an action upon the two guards shooting at him: right after they do so, he will attempt to read the scroll.

Anvuss will infuse himself with a shield of faith, adding 2 to his AC -- touch AC included.

ooc: I believe this is a 1st level Artificer infusion, though I don't have my book handy.

*As he begins the infusion, both enemies fire, and one of them barely misses while the other goes terribly astray.*

Over the next few rounds, Anvuss struggles to make the $%%&$ scroll work...

*Anvuss is hit once on the second failed attempt and then again while he is activating by an incredibly lucky ricochet shot by the guard who has been consistently getting bad shots. He easily maintains his concentration.*

(OOC: 7 damage, total 17. Speed is now increased to 40 feet thanks to Expeditious Retreat. Stupid Natural 20s, eh?)
