Help me help my player build his fighter.

My friend is making a new character for the campaign I'm currently running, but as I generally play rogues and spellcasters in other campaigns, I have very little experience building sword and board fighters, which is the kind he wants to build.

To give some specifics:
The character level is 9th
Normal Starting Gold for 9th level
30 point buy
He wants a straight human fighter that uses a scimitar and shield or just a falchion, and he wants maxxed out balance, tumble, and jump for swashbuckly purposes.

How would you guys proceed with that?

As balance and tumble are not on the skill list of fighters I would suggest a rogue/fighter mix headed to dervish from CW. You could switch rogue and scout from CV for extra damage.

I think his wish to use the tumble skill and the scimitar would make him a perfect dervish. Its not a sword and board fighter but which swashbuckler is?

How about a Human Scout 4/Swashbuckler 3/Fighter 2?

Add 2 more Fighter levels, 1 more Scout level, and afterwards Swashbuckler all the way.

I guess one question is how he wants to use the shield:

As a defensive item, or take the 2 weapon route and Improved Shield Bash?

Guess dealing damage might be bit difficult... Good strength, +XD6 damage weapons and weapon specialisation should help.

I think it'd be difficult to make a normal fighter that has maxed acrobatics. Either need to multiclass into something or house rule re-write the fighters skill list?

I'd be tempted to do that... Switch the ride/handle animal for tumble/balance. Probably switch intimidate for bluff and dump the heavy armour proficiency. I don't think it'd be too strong - light fighters with sword and board isn't exactly the crunchiest class I can think of? YMMV.

Alas, I don't have complete adventurer.

Inconsequenti-AL, trading out those skills does seem to be a simple way to do things.

Another thing I failed to mention...he's trying to build it to help accomodate the other two members of the party (a wizard and a cleric, both level 9).

Perhaps a fighter/dervish would fill the role he's looking at.

thanks guys, I'm sure we'll figure something out
