Help Me Stat the Roman Legions

Infiniti2000

First Post
I'm looking to stat up the Roman legions in 4e. Has someone done this already? If not, what do you recommend (not PCs) for:

Officers
Legate - legion commander (over 6000 men)
Broad Band Tribune - second in command
junior tribunes
Camp Prefect - third in command

Centurions
First File (commanding centurion of first cohort, 800 men)
Front Spear (command centurion of forward spear centuries, leaders of other cohorts, 600 men)
Normal centurions
Decurion - commands cavalry unit of 10-30

Legionary - armed with spear or javelin and gladius
Legionary - armed with gladius
Legionary - cavalry - armed with spear and gladius
Legionary - armed with bow and gladius

I'm taking a little liberty here and there, so excuse the lack of complete authenticity. If you have historically accurate recommendations, please let me know, but I'll only use them if they'll add fun to the game. I know that the officers are sometimes not combat-oriented (appointed senators and whatnot), but I don't really care about that. I would expect these statted officers to be capable. For the odd, appointed case, I'll handle that as necessary for story purposes.

Oh-oh-oh! That classic Roman tortoise formation would be an excellent opportunity to pin the players against a swarm of humanoid-sized opponents!

Considering the discipline of the legionnaires in the formation, that could even be an Elite Soldier of the Gargantuan natural humanoid (swarm) type.

*eagerly goes off to stat one, just for kicks*

You'll find them already statted up in the Monster Manual, pp. 138-140. For some reason, they're mislabeled "hobgoblins." :)

Well played, sir! Also, good call. Hobgoblins are a great fit.

The swarm idea would be great fun as well...

Really, though, it all depends on what their role will be in the game. Who are the PCs in this campaign? Will they be fighting entire legions, or will they be facing off with individual soldiers? What level are the PCs?

The proper 4e answer is that it depends on who they are fighting.
Hobgoblins are a good starting point.

For the more "political" leaders you could use something like the human noble in MM2 who has very indirect leadery abilities. I would make all centurions elites :)

Never! It shall not be allowed!

But more seriously, it depends on a couple of things. First, your game world, how magical is it, and how realistic do you want the Legion? Second, what role will the PC's have with the legion? Allies? Enemies?
