Help my 12 hp wizard (lvl 4)

Wizards and Sorcerers get shafted on HP. That's the main tradeoff for those nifty spells. Besides, who needs HP when you're smart enough to avoid nasty situations? You DO have a high INT, right? Always have a plan B. And a plan C. When things REALLY go to hell, be ready with plan D.

...Players roll their hit die as normal but I also roll the same hit die as well, behind the DM screen. Player now gets to choose: Their roll or my concealed roll. If the player happens to roll really low they always go for my roll (which is usually better) but sometimes one of my players try to push their luck and take my roll when they get an average roll. Sometimes it pays, sometimes it doesn't LOL. ...

Our DM does the same thing. But to make it even more interesting, he rolls 3 differently colored dice and if we want one of his rolls, we have to call out the color. I wished I had ESP many times in the past...

Now about the subject of this thread; I hate to say this, but the only good solid permanent solution to the problem (assuming you really can't live with this wizard class "feature") is to take a level or two of another class. You may even want to consider a cleric level. Not only will you be able to heal yourself but you'll get a lot of good protection spells too.

What happens when the fireball is launched at him while he is flat-footed? Besides him going into negative hit points.

Reflex saves are unaffected by being flatfooted. IOW, flatfooted or not, you can always make a reflex save.

So regardless of when the fireball is tossed his way, he gets to save for half.

This is simply a case of a player disliking one of hte built-in ways by which his character PAYS for their GOOD parts. My sympathy level is, therefor, much reduced ...

I'd say everyone is giving you good advice. False life, craft wondrous (for amulet of health, vest of false life, brooch of shielding, etc.), and invisibility. Elemental resistance is probably not a bad idea either.

Also, pick opposing casters out of the crowd if you ever face them. Get Improved Counterspell or load up on dispel magics and ready them for his/her casting until your party takes them out. Not only will you save yourself from a potential fireball, but you will also gain the trust of your party members since you are cancelling spells that would have been cast on them as well.

All part of your master plan I'm sure before you turn them into undead slaves!!! ;)
