Help: Sorcerer spell list.

Astlin

First Post
I am going to be playing a Sorcerer Rogue in an upcoming campaign. I plan on going into Arcane Trickster.

I have not played a caster in 3E and I am worried about choosing a wrong spell with the Sorcerer. (You can't 'forget' a spell correct?)

I need help with spell selection. What spells would you take for a stealthy caster?

Thanks

I do not have Tome and Blood available right now, so bear with me.

The first spells that come to mind:

Invisibility
Mage hand
alter self
color spray
minor or even major image
Cat's grace

I will add more if I can think of it.

It really deopends on the character. For a sorcerer I like to pick spells that reflect the character. Illusions are always good. Most Sorcerer/rogues are sneaky and a good illusion can be a great diversion. Look for versatile spells. Many people take combat related ones, but I perfer spells that can serve multiple functions. Sorcerer/rogue type character is probably best out of combat.

color spray
magic missle
shield

web
glitterdust
blur

haste
vampiric touch
blink

superior invisibility
dimensional door
polymorph other

wall of force

disintegrate

limited wish

wish

Most of the above spells are musts for sorcerers.

Those are good spells that most people take. I'm really surprised there's no dispel magic there though.

However, I suggest coming up with signiture spells that make sense for the character. So many sorcerers are paper cut outs these days......

I resemble that remark.:)

When selecting your spells try to get spells that scale well--sleep & color spray in particular often don't get as much use when you're 10th level. You generally want spells that get better as you get higher level.

Avoid duplication. If you want to take Improved Invisibility as a 4th level spell do you really want to spend one of your precious slots on Invisibility? The same can be said of the various Summon Monster spells and multiple damage spells that are of similar type. Maybe you do want 2 types of invisibility but don't make that selection lightly.

Who else is in your party? Can you rely on them to have a Dispel Magic if you don't? Will they provide buffing spells if you don't?

Don't forget you can always "trade down" spell slots, so if things get complicated, just convert all your slots to Magic Missle and blast everything that moves.

Have fun.

Wish, I think, is a poor choice for a wizard, considering the huge XP cost. Better to go with something you can use in the average adventure, like shapechange or timestop. Both of these are also great sneakyguy spells, although you probably won't ever get them if you're multiclassing.

While I generally agree with Henet on the spell duplication for sorcerers bieing bad. I will say you may want 2 types of invisibility. invisibility one lasts 10 minutes a level, is 2nd level so you can at early levels likely bust it out for the whole party. improved invis has a much shorter duration, and as its a higher level and your Chr may not be amazing you may not have a ton of 4th levels spells to blow on making the aprty invisible.

Other spells that I find necessary, blink. In fact I usually wont take improved invis if I take blink. The reason being the benefit for improved invis is the tons O sneak attacks every round, blink gives you the same bennie, and it lets you hop through walls, doors and other obstrucitons you may find annoying as a rogue, and you already have invis right so you cover the you don't see me aspect fairly well anyway.

Other spells that are always good are the really versatile spells like poly self/other, and fabricate, always take fabricate it is just too dang useful.

A couple of spells you should always take:
Shield. The nr. 1 defense spell
Magic Missile: Solid damage for a lvl 1 spell
Alter self: Your change self, water breathing and fly spell in one package
Lightning bolt: Need I say more?
Improved invis: Its very good not to be seen, while casting
Polymorph other: Polymorphing yourself into a pixie or troll is quite useful

And, might you come to lvl 9: TIME STOP. Your enemy will be death before he and the rest of your party knows it

If you are heading for Arcane Trickster, it seems like you would want one or two low level Touch attack/ranged touch attack spells. Shocking grasp, various elemental orb spells from T&B, melf's acid arrow, ray of frost, etc.
