Any ideas on what the fancy gentleman in the top hat is supposed to be?

Given the whole dark and misty aesthetic of the cover, possibly a member of the Unseelie Court?

A fey hobgoblin from the UA?

He seems pretty far off from the usual depiction of hobgoblins in this edition. If it wasn't for a ears I would say he was human (or something in human form).

That's why I specified the UA fey hobgoblin, which are very different from the we-thought-it-was-a-good-idea-at-the-time samurai hobgoblins of the last few editions.

Cool Displacer beast, but i have been disappointed in the 5e version of this venerable creature. It is not much of a threat. To low an AC and weak displacement.

Hopefully they provide a advanced version.

Maybe the one with the Butterfly wings on the standard cover's back IS the Displacer Lord, which IIRC was supposed to be a stronger/tougher Displacer.

I'm still fond of the Samurai/Klingon Hobgoblins.

True, but I'm not getting any goblin-y vibes from him. My money's on an archfey (don't they have mutable appearances?).

I'm still fond of the Samurai/Klingon Hobgoblins.

They need to dial back on some of the faux-Asian stereotypes. You can have honorable and disciplined inhuman warriors without cribbing from real world peoples to do it.

While I agree, besides the appearance of their armor, I always got more of a Roman Empire* vibe from them, more so than samurai.

*Roman Empire by way of Caesar's Legion in Fallout: New Vegas, really.
