A Bold Move, By A Desperate Giant!

Vale casts a spell, and a look of concentration washes over his countenance. He grasps his holy symbol tightly in his fist, and it begins to glow. His eyes close, and squint tightly, the look of extreme focus. It looks as if he may be asking for guidance of some kind.

You cannot specify a unique item (such as “Baron Vulden’s signet ring”) unless you have observed that particular item firsthand (not through divination). PHB, pp. 249.

Vale has met this criteria, having seen Vulka use it to cast spells within the last 30 seconds or so.

Vale gets the impression that there are two paths to what he seeks; South through the Great Hall is a distance of over 300 feet, while simply proceeding East (back the way the party came) will get him there by covering a distance of only 230 feet. Thus, the most obvious (and shortest) path is East.

Vale suddenly snaps to attention once more, and begins moving East, back down the hallway! He looks dead set on his intentions!


As Vale reaches the edge of the Hallway, the party can hear an escalation of the battle to the South, near the entrance! There are also cries of fury, desperation, and anger coming from across the way, in the direction of the kitchen! (Where the Orc Butler originally came from.)

Not What The Giant Expected!

Lathir Croc snaps at the Giant as he passes by!

As the Giant tries to step over the Crocodile, the animal whips its head up suddenly, snapping down onto his right calf, and mauling him savagely, ripping into his flesh, causing blood to flow freely! The Giant screams in agony, but keeps going.

GM:
Dewydd: Confirmed critical (see LINE chat) for 25 pts. damage.


Simultaneously, Dewydd hacks at the Giant's backside as he moves away. His blade cuts the Giant along his left-rear hamstring, leaving a nasty gash!

GM:
Hill Giant #7 has taken a total of 78 points of damage.


GM: Travis hits AC 12 on his attack of opportunity, and AC 16 on his readied action. Both attacks miss.


As the Giant approaches Travis, the seasoned merc slashes twice with his big broadsword; however, the armor covering the Giant's legs proves tougher than Travis had anticipated, and both blows are absorbed harmlessly. Travis mutters something crude under his breath, as he continues to sing along with Sir Duncan and Lady Ebony.

The big Giant brings his blade down with furious rage, and misses Kleborn by a WHISKER! Sparks fly as the sword strikes the cobblestone floor! Kleborn eyes the big blade nervously, realizing that it would have likely ended him, had it connected! The Giant took a huge risk by making the move he did, and it failed to pay off, by the narrowest of margins. The gashes on his calf and hamstring are bleeding badly, and he looks to be in very bad shape!

Respen's Attention: Kleborn or Vale

~ The tide appears to be turning! ~

"Vale! Where are you going?!"

Respen hears Vale praying up a spell in Dwarven, and then sees the dwarf dart (if dwarves can actually 'dart') back down the southern wall of the corridor). He also hears Vale cursing loudly in dwarven, specifically referring to Lolth and giants. Vale's disgust is easy to ascertain.
OOC: sense motive check = 16
He is looking for the giant priestess by the Lolth symbol she is sporting.
OOC: Spellcraft = 34
At the same time he is acutely aware of the giant bearing down on Kleborn, and he grits his teeth as the giant's weapon misses Kleborn by a hair.

Instantly he begins withdrawing toward Vale loosing two arrows toward the giant, erring left.
OOC: Ranged Attack (see rolz.org) 20 & 23 (including modifiers); applied a -4 modifier shooting into a melee; Request DM advisory whether that should indeed be applied and if so, whether the increase in to hit to 24 and 27 changes the result (Damage 11, 14)


Respen mentally connects with Nel, "Vale has the giant priestess' scent! I'm going with him!"

Kleborn watches the sword falling inches from his face. He begins to sweat profusely, he knew if that strike landed true it might have been the end of him. Kleborn does not normally scare easily, but for a brief moment he was scared. Kleborn does not let the fear overtake him though. He knows he must act, and knows he is in a bad way with this Giant. He again curses, "Damn this bow and arrow, if I had my sword and shield I could make a better work of this Giant." He calms himself and realizes what he must do.

He thinks to himself ~I must make myself more difficult to hit, or this giant will pick me apart.~ He shoulders his bow and picks up his trusty sword and shield. "Ahh Jack and Jill, my trusty friends" Kleborn says to his items. He gets his shield situated and then attacks.

OOC: Kleborn calls 8 points of Expertise. Kleborn calls Dodge against the Giant.


He knows that by being so cautious with his movements, it would be more difficult for him to hit the Giant, but it would also be more difficult for this big oaf to hit him. As he reaches for his items, he sees that the Giant is about to attack him again, before he will even get a chance to respond.

OOC: Haste attack=17 to hit

Nelvandra Follows Respen!

Kleborn takes a quick swipe at the battered Giant, but not before it can swipe at him also!

Despite having to bend over momentarily, exposing himself to a quick swipe by the Giant, Kleborn is still agile enough to quickly sidestep the Giant's massive blade, which strikes the ground hard once more, producing another shower of sparks.

Dodging the Giant's blow meant being out-of-position for his own attack; Kleborn's riposte misses the Giant by a HAIR.

Nelvandra, with a calm precision and methodology borne of her ruthlessness, her meticulous nature, and her dedication, once again calls forth a ray of electrical energy, which snakes around her allies, seeking the Giant relentlessly; the ray finds its battered and weary target, and slams into it, causing the Giant a considerable amount of pain. An arc of lightning envelops the Giant, sizzling and crackling, scorching his skin, and causing him to convulse violently; the Giant arches his back as a seizure grips him, and then slumps forward, collapsing on the floor, his nervous system finally overcome by repeated exposure to electricity.

The Giant has taken a total of 109 points of damage. The Giant goes down!

Since the Giant is not bleeding from an open wound, he must make a Fort save every round, or lose a hit point.
(This represents the Giant's ability to resist going into cardiac arrest / heart failure.)
Fort Save DC = 10 + Damage Dealt (17) = 27.
Giant will make his first save next round.

I use a swift action to re-ready my expended maneuvers and then charge H2 to complete it. Knowing that I will provoke an attack by moving into range, I do not use any of my special abilities. "Careful!" I warn the newcomers as I fly to my target. "That mist will fatigue you and those spikes will do a deal of damage to your legs."

I attack the enemy, swinging my blade in deadly arcs.

OOC: Attack 1: 30 to-hit, 16 damage.
Attack 2: 32 to-hit, 13 damage.
Attack 3: 36 to-hit, 14 damage.
Attack 4: 19 to-hit, 15 damage.

My current AC is 35 due to charging.

Dewydd's Mighty Charge!

Dewydd, who is currently under the effects of a Fly spell, charges through the air, like an arrow launched from an archer's bow!

Dewydd takes one blow, but is able to deliver three, as he passes over the Giant, twisting his body in mid-air to achieve three, precise, extremely effective cuts. The first cut rakes the Giant's left cheek, exposing his jaw as it rips away part of his face! The second cut is a stab which pierces the Giant's torso around the collarbone, penetrating about 4 inches. Had this been a normal man, he would have been killed instantly. Lastly, Dewydd slices the Giant in his left kidney, causing a spray of blood to spill onto the floor! The Giant's knees buckle as he receives the three terrible wounds, but somehow, he remains standing!

My base rolls are 14 and 9. (Ooof!)

Afraid to hit the bodies of the Dwarves and, especially, the Halfling maiden, Tam realizes he may have sent those two shafts too quickly.

GM:
Distance to target: 50 ft.
Range increment for Short Bow: 60 ft. (You are in short range, no range penalty.)
Base rolls of 14 and 9 are adjusted to 26 and 21 (You have ranged attack of +12)

Tam's Self-Doubt Re-Examined!

As Tam fires two shots at the badly wounded Giant, the thought crosses his mind that the dangling prisoners might get in his way. After both arrows land true, Tam realizes that perhaps, in the future, he should learn to trust his instincts. Tam has always been known for his skill with archery, even when he was little, shooting targets at the village tournaments. But he was also plagued by self-doubt, because of the words of Talinar Tallpine, the village bully.

Talinar Tallpine said:
"...That was a lucky shot, Wild Hair! You'll never really be as good an archer as I am. I missed my last shot on purpose, just because I felt sorry for you. But don't get too big of an ego about it, alright? And while we're at it, stay away from Viola Cobblepot. She wouldn't want to go to the Spring Dance with a shrimp like you, when she could go with someone like me. You need to learn your place in the world, Wild Hair."

It is the Giant's scream of agony that makes Tam come to the realization that he had never, his whole life, given himself the credit he deserved. Perhaps one day soon, he would return to the village, and bloody Talinar's nose, just for the fun of it.

Tam's first arrow hits the Giant in the shoulder, piercing his fine, Drow-made Banded Mail armor, and burning him with holy energy! The Giant claws frantically at the wound, and does not see the second arrow coming: an arrow which strikes him in the face, piercing his left nostril at an upwards angle, burrowing deeply into his skull! The Giant collapses in a heap, where he begins to bleed out!
