He didn't. The odds kept saying Hiro must be this great super powered individual - but Hiro kept turning out to be a disappointment with no hint of power.
Ultimately that turned around of course. But the Old Man never "missed it"; rather, he predicted it but it just beat the odds and showed up later than was likely.

I keep thinking about powers not seen yet that would be neat, interesting and doable on a TV budget. I keep returning to one power- probability control... aka luck.
Foe with this power is surrounded by Nathan, Hiro, Peter and Clair (argueably the more powerful of the powers) They go to stop the person. Nathan lunges out to grab the person, Peter reaches up with an electrical charge readied, Clair runs up from behind the foe and Hiro....
Blinks, adjusts his glasses as time stops. He smiles and walks calmly up to the foe. As be passes the "frozen" Nathan the camera pans down to his shoes. Hiro trips on his shoe lace- the fall disrupts his concentration. Nathan suddenly has Hiro to trip over. Peter also distracted by the sudden dropping of BOTH Hiro and his brother accidently releases a bolt which misses the target but strikes Clair dead on throwing her away. Everyone distracted stops while the foe runs around a corner and wow- a taxi just happens to be there and admits the person. Clean get away.... comical, jarring and effective yet on a low budget.
