Hide in Plain Sight

HiPS is more powerfull in NWN, because in DnD when you hide you need somthing to hide an in NWN you can walk pass any body when hiding.

That sounds exactly like the "DnD" ability description.
Wow, I always wondered why it was called "Hide IN PLAIN SIGHT"! :)

(It always surprises me when someone asks about HiPS, how many people seem to think it's just like Hide with a different name.)

The second line of the ability description goes one step further. As long as she is within 10 feet of some kind of shadow (not her own) a shadowdancer can even hide without the need for cover or concealment. A common misperception is that the shadowdancer must be hiding in a shadow, or somehow causes a shadow within 10 feet to expand so that she can hide in it. Neither is implied by the ability.

This is clearly still a contentious issue. I've played in a game where there was a shadowdancer with a continual flame helmet, casting shadows all around himself. The ruling on it was that he could hide in plain sight at almost any time and place. This, in my opinion, resulted in two problems. The first being the suspention of disbelief that a character with a flaming helmet could just disappear, and the second being that the character was incredably powerful.

This being said, he was damn cool, and in this campaign I'm fashioning a shadowdancer of my own. I'm going to try to refrain from such excess, but power corrupts...

Moreover, even if you (try in vain) to house rule this so that "In My Campaign!" True Seeing works on the Shadowdancer's HiPS: the ranger HiPS is (Ex).........therefore non-magical...........therefore........ :D
Agreed. The combination of the ranger's Camouflage (Ex - he can hide in natural terrain, even if it doesn't grant cover or concealment) and Hide in Plain Sight (Ex - he can hide in natural terrain, even when observed) abilities is pretty much the same as the shadowdancer's Hide in Plain Sight (Su - she can hide even when observed, without the need for cover or concealment, when she is within 10 feet of some sort of shadow) ability. The only differences are the trigger conditions (ranger: natural terrain, shadowdancer: within 10 feet of some sort of shadow) and the nature of the abilities (ranger: extraordinary, shadowdancer: supernatural). True seeing would not foil a ranger's Camouflage and Hide in Plain Sight abilities.

There are 2 easy work arounds with this tactic. Even though the character is hiding, he can't hide the illumination that his continual flame helmet (CFH) gives off. Enemy casters just target the center of the circle of illumination created by the CFH - preferably with something that doesn't use a reflex save or with a dispel magic.

If you move your probably not in his shadow anymore. Shadows cast by people arent that big. So you still reapear.
Didn't have to be in his shadow in the 1st place, only within 10' of it.

O X X X O
X X S X X
O X X X O

The character could move to any of the squares marked with an X around the shadow S and still be within 10' of it and still be hiding - so the victim casting shadow S has to guess where to move.

How can people seeing in the shadow not matter? Using common sense explain that one. Its not a magical ability. Its not invisibility, Its not even a shapechanging spell to make you look like a shadow. So how exactly does it work in your opinion?
Others have already answered this - it is magic for a shadow dancer.

S S S S S
S S S S X
S S S X D
S S X X X
S X X V X

The victim's (V) ability to see through the shadows (S) doesn't help him see the Shadowdancer (D) at all.
