Hiding true alignment?

Hi,
I am without my books right here, and are not that experienced in this part of the game.
Problem: I just started DM a single player, a paladin PC, and he is about to venture of with a "friend" of non-paladin like alignment. They are both low-level (2 and 3). What options does the NPC have for hiding his alignment from the detect evil other that roleplaying it so good that the paladin believes his story?
I most preferably would like the rules to be within one of wotc books.
Thank you very much,
Stegger

Offhand, I'd try casting Undetectable Alignment. 24hrs of immunity from having your alignment detected for the low, low, cost of a 1st level Bard spell (2nd Clr, 2nd Pal).

The typical answer is to have the NPC have an Amulet of Proof against Detection and Location. But that's a 35k item, and a 3rd-level npc is unlikely to have one.

The method that looks most likely to work for this fellow is the Misdirection spell. It causes all divination spells that reveal auras to, instead of reading his aura, instead read the aura of a designated other person or item. It lasts 1 hour/level of caster.

The obvious target of the Misdirection is the paladin himself. So your NPC casts the spell (or has it cast on him) and all divination attempts against him instead produce results as though he were the PC paladin.

Hey, I forgot about that one. It looks like it could even be legitimately made into a potion.
