Holy Water Bomb for 4000 hp of Damage

I cannot believe some of you would think it's reasonable for a player to spend a MASSIVE amount of gold on a one-shot item that might miss entirely, and still rule it does the damage of a first level spell (5d6).

I mean come on guys, let the player get something useful from all that gold! Heck, he could probably do more damage if he dropped the actual gold pieces on the head of the undead target!
This makes sense. When the player proposed this to me originally, he had no idea how much it would cost. Neither did I until I priced it out after starting this thread.

So....how much damage would 1 gp do dropped on the head of a vampire? Assume that the gp was travelling at terminal velocity......... :lol:

i would say about the same as a old 50 cal. musket so 2d10
and droping 57700 lbs of copper on someone will hurt

None. I don't think it would even penetrate the vampire's DR. I'd say it does 1d2 non-lethal damage.

Regarding the dropped GP, and knowing that RW != DnD... A recent Mythbusters episode busted the myth of the lethal penny dropped from the Empire State Building.. coinage from above is not a killer.

Personally I don't think PC's expediture in gold should be a direct correlation to damage. {But Mr DM Guy... I used special mineral waters from the spring at Delphi for the Holy Water.. making this Holy Water Bomb cost twice as much, so it should do twice as much damage,,, right?}

I am with mvincent on this, and think the use of Immersion rules fits nicely at X20 base damage, or 20D4. And I might be able to be convinced to rule that each successive round deals 5D4 less damage due to the target being soaked... that puts it up to a max of 200hp damage. Still an expensive one-shot weapon... but maybe something a church would grant to a favored Undead Hunter on a special mission. {Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch? :D }

In keeping with my other rulings, touch attack or save..not both. In this case I would go with a Touch attack.

I strongly agree with this. A worse example would be when the barbarian wants to spend double (base price) on his two-handed sword in order to get higher base damage dice. Why not, right, if you can do it with holy water? ;)

But a gold coin is most definately NOT a penny. Pennies are copper, or at least copper clad around another light metal. Gold is heavy.

One of my players emailed me a proposal for a Holy Water Bomb as detailed below.

One pint of Holy Water does 2d4 damage. There are 8 pints in a Gallon. One Dust of Dryness pellet can absorb up to 100 gallons of water. Therefore 1600 pints of Holy Water + 1 Dust of Dryness pellet = (1600x(2d4)) points of damage to Undead. Average damage: 4000 hp.

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#dustofDryness

Note that a Dust of Dryness pellet will destroy a Water Elemental or do 5d6 points of damage if it makes its saving throw. My ruling on the Holy Water bomb was that it would do 5d6 points of damage to anything affected by Holy Water on a ranged touch attack with no save allowed.

Thoughts? Are there any relevant rules of which I’m unaware?
hehe, silly Nick.

So, how much would a decanter of endless holy water cost?

Or perhaps what is needed is some sort of variant golem, with create water and bless water as spell-like abilities, and some attached tanks to store the saved-up holy water it makes. Add some sort of nozzle for spraying the water out...

Darn it! Now you just gave me an idea for an Iron Golem with a decanter at the end of one arm instead of a hand.

Fire truck DnD style!
