House Rules Suck

True. But, with 3rd Edition, it's a lot less of a mess, and just as much fun (if not more so).

I couldn't agree more. 3E rocks!

My very short point was, 1E was a blast, I have nothing but thanks to GG for bringing me into one of the funnest hobbies anyone should ever ask for.

What a mess it was, and yet a child could still learn to play the game, as my friends and I in fact did... Seriously, if children were playing D&D, which I know they were as I was one of many in my little town, then how much of a mess was it?

For one thing, you and your friends (and myself, for that matter) were not typical children.

Anyway, if the original D&D wasn't such a rat's nest of hodgepodge, patchwork rules, then why the need (and the resounding success) of 2nd and 3rd Editions (i.e. major revisions or overhauls)?

Which reminds me: It was largely due to the proliferation of house rules -- which introduced and incorporated progressively better and better ideas and game mechanics -- that 2nd and 3rd Editions D&D came about, in the first place!

For the same reason Star Trek: The Next Generation was created and did so well.

I'm thankful toward Gygax too. But he shouldn't have gotten most (if not all) of the credit for it, in those early days.

If this is true (that he got all the credit) then I quite agree. I'm pretty vague as to the exact history of who did what and when.

One guy wrote a game for skirmish combat.

Another guy wrote house rules for playing the leaders of those combats.

Those house rules were later called Dungeons & Dragons.

Read the SRD line in the OGL Copyright Notice of any d20 product.

'Nuff said.;)

If Gygax really did say that, he's even more arrogant and stuck-up than I ever imagined.

I love the irony that this was posted by Rary the Traitor. You have indeed turned from your old friends, Rary.
