How did your gaming group come about?

Found my current group through EN World. Been at it over a year now. Briefly participated in two other ill-fated groups found through EN World the year before that. Like many others, my first and longest running group started in H.S., though we went to different schools, and I still stay in touch with most of those guys, especially since one is my brother. Had a couple other groups I played with in college (Northern and Southern Ill. U.'s) but we didn't stay in touch.

My group was composed of neighbors, who I believe met through the Scouts / being across the street and made long term friendships that went through college.

I joined it by being shoved out the door by my girlfriend at the time who wanted me to be social, and my former roomie taking me across campus to meet a bunch of folks. I remember stepping across the threshold of that poorly lit, cramped single, looking at a motley gang of 8 people sitting on the bed, on the floor, at the desk- wherever they could fit, with character sheets and dice.

My friend grabbed my shirt as I started to leave.

Now it's five years later and I'm a DM.

I've only lived in the Detroit area for the last four years. My wife actually overheard some folks at church (of all places) talking about D&D, and she butted in and said, "hey, my husband plays that!" We didn't actually know that group very well prior to that, but they became my group for several months. For a variety of reasons, mostly including one member getting pulled completely away from gaming thanks to his Xbox and another two members moving out, etc. our group shrank to 2-3 of us.

Meanwhile, I met two other ENWorlders in person, and we started up a group made of them and the remains of my older group. Ironically, both of the guys that I recruited from ENWorld said that their respective "main" groups had kinda fallen apart due to various forces as well. We were able to scavenge a member or two, but essentially our own "side" group became everyone's "main" group in short order.

Currently, our group is myself, Quickbeam (who will be DMing Age of Worms as our next jaunt), broghammerj whom we all met at the Detroit ENWorld Gameday, shadowlight who is the last remnant of my old group, Stockdale (who's sadly very busy and who's involvement is not consistent until his schedule frees up more) and Bob. Bob comes from Quickbeam's old group, and as far as I know, does not frequent ENWorld.

I have a few gaming groups - but I'll detail my core D&D group of three players.

Back in the early 90's, I was an Industrial music DJ and heavily into that music scene, as well as the fetish / goth scene in town (the two were often linked via various people, myself included). One of the movers and shakers in the goth / fetish scene was a body piercer named Denise. We liked the same music, the same fetishes, and we had similar passtimes - she organized fetish events, I organized industrial music events. We hooked up, started seeing each other a lot, and I discovered that she used to play D&D pretty heavily until Unearthed Arcana had been released.

I taught her how to play Vampire, she taught me how to do body piercing.

We also got married.

The other two members of our gaming group are our two kids. We are raising the next generation of gamer geeks.

Seriously. I was at the local watering hole with some of my crew, in full adventuring gear*, when I spotted this hot girl who looked like Pris from Blade Runner. So I introduced myself. Actually, I walked up to her, since she looked like Pris, and said "Hey, Can you turn a cartwheel?" (geekiest pickup line ever). Her answer was "No, but I can crush your head between my thighs." (hottest response ever). She was hot. We got married.

Our group actually met at our FLGS.
We've been together going on four years now.

We've all DM'ed at some point, and we've gone through many different systems/settings.

The cool thing is, we're all friends. We hang out together beyond gaming. (We actually went to Medieval Mansion a few months ago.. THAT was a blast!!)

Currently, our main games are "Midnight" and "Eberron", though we also run "WLD". We're thinking of tyring Shackled City soon, too. (The group wants to create an All-Cleric party for that, no less!!)

LOL. When the nukes do drop, the aliens invade, or the zombies attack...the gamers of the world shall rise to power. We're the only ones who will know what to do! Anything hits the fan and my old group had a plan to meet at one players farm out in the boonies, collect all his weapons (lots of them), reinforce the surrounding area, and then go hunting. We had a plan and we were ready. Still waiting.

How our group met

My current group actually met as a result of a post I put on this here website!

I got about a dozen responses, either on the post, or by email.

We met, and two gaming groups were formed that day. I would say that was sometime in 2002.

Since that time, the two groups have dissolved for one reason or another (babies, moving away, different visions of play, etc...). What resulted from that is one combined group that has been playing together for about a year + right now. Great group of diverse people who all have different modes of play.

3rd edition rules and these boards got me back into a hobby that was a big part of my life when I was younger (I am an old fart of 35 now). I am actually thinking of posting again in the hope of finding a Thieves World or Freeport (5th Anniv) campaign that I can join locally as a player!

Naw, I live down the road from

(a) A crazy family of survivalists. Home-schooled kids. Army surplus store. Far far far FAR too many guns. Mad survivalist skillz.

(b) A major firearms importer / exporter. We used to work for him, and a few friends of our still do, and if it all came down to it, I'd go there. He's got about a dozen M-2 Browning MG's converted for semi-auto fire. And thousands of other firearms. And mad survivalist skillz. If he won't take us in, then we'll get Peter to grab one and come over here. We have a farm.

Well, kind of an interesting story. We have been playing since January and we already lost one player with a second about to leave because he is moving. My friend and I had been talking about playing again and participated in a PBeM for about a year. We went to a few cons, hung out on Enworld, Paizo, and Wotc's message boards, and decided we would get a group together. Actually he did most of the work.

We met three guys from various postings (including an ultra-famous EnWorld Poster) and there was myself, my friend, and his boss. One of the three left pretty early on (about 7 or 8 sessions in) because of work woes, and we brought in a guy that I work with. Now my friends' boss is leaving so he brought in another co-worker, and we are back to full.

I have to say it has been very interesting, and I have met a few great people. One guy has a great knowledge of the game, and is very generous when it comes to sharing tidbits, which as many of you know some people can be very poor about helping out novices. Another guy plays very unique characters and does a great job with them. He also is a fascinating person in a lot of ways. My co-worker had only been working with me for a few weeks when he joined our group and he has quickly become a pretty solid friend. The boss has added an interesting dynamic and will be missed. My friend and I have done very well here, I think, and I am better for the experience of meeting these guys. Besides the fact that they are all cool and we have gotten along quite well they have been good to learn from and I hope we stay together for some time.
