Spurred by a few discussions on different topics, I've been contemplating what the habits of players in other groups. Do they read most sources? Are they reasonably insulated from topics on books?

My group reads a wide variety of books. These days they are reading more player oriented things as that's the focus for them. But with other potential DM's in the group I encourage them to read what they want.

Everything they can get their hands on ... which is why I prefer making up the adventures. They can't read it before I run it. ;) Has been like that for a LONG time.

My players tend to read player-oriented books. Unfortunately, some think that anything written in any book is balanced and allowable in any game.

"I want a half-dragon halfling Tallentia Plains dinorider barbarian that has taken the Vow of Poverty for your game set in Middle-Earth."

Knowledge of the non-core books? Yeah right! I'm lucky if they even read the core books...
quoted for truth...

I'm happy if they know their spells without reading the book, or if they begin the search at a promising point (the last pages, and not the first of the book). And I (as a DM) am the only one who has the books. They seem not interested in buying any.

One of my Players buys no books, the other buys lots of books. He's got the whole complete series, some Faerun stuff, and Lords of Madness. Does he memorize the rules? Not really, he just enjoys reading them. He does remember that such and such feat does this or such and such PrC is kinda like that, though, so he's good for ideas if not implementation.
