How do you create your character?

Character Concept -> rough draft of abilities -> tweak concept to match abilities -> final draft.

This plan rarely works; no concept is finished unscathed.

Or, in Champions terms, I usually run out of points before I run out of concept.

I so know this feeling. I doubt 5th Ed changing the standard starting points to 350 will help this much either.:)

I usually work from a a very basic concept. Malacon the Seer, thug with undeveloped ability in divination. "I 'see' you taking a long fall in the near future...unless you pay up that 100 gold right fast!" Add complications. Malacon is half elven who physically takes after the elven side, so his dex and cha are brought higher. But he was raised in human society,so doens't even speak elven. Add quirks and personal touches. Malacon loves to gamble and perhaps through his undeveloped talent, he's excellent at it. Season to taste with the sad background of a halfbreed in the poor side of town.

Then realize the concept doesn't work in d20 and start over.:)

Since my fellow players usually don't give a damn about their chars doing anything but fight i usually end up doing the social interaction-part as well as the magic part. so my choice is always limited... and no, i don't play sorcerers .-)

Poor guy! Better speak with your DM about it :D *gnhihihihi*

ahh, no thanx, last time i did that, he did the opposite of what i wanted to do... ;)

and on the other hand the DM can't make the players play something they don't want to. Just think of a hacknslash-player, his sorcerer will still be standing in front row, right? ;)

You mean just as his next character the halforc barbarian who valiantly died to get a magic sword for the group :D? Ya well, he could have thought twice about pursuing three nearly unhurt enemies...Wait, thinking: That's the problem.

Hmm. I think I'll try another thing next time. Who knows if it will work?

I usually start with an image-often a picture from Dragon or a D&D book-and ask myself what that person is like. The idea percolates in my subconscious until he or she springs, almost-fully-formed and Athena-like, from my brain onto a Word document.

I typically do it by one of two ways:

1) Get my dice first, then character idea. The die rolls will many times automatically suggest what kind of character I want.

2) Come up with concepts. I am usually long on concept, short in die rolls to make something acceptable. Often, it's simply races and classes that I haven't put together yet (or seen being put together).
