27-30 point buy is the most common method.

The other 5e games used 4d6 (drop lowest die) arranged to taste. However, if the stats turned out terrible he allowed us to use 25 point buy as a safety net.

Yeah, interesting idea. I'd be interested to see if you actually end up with one out of six PCs having an 18 in one stat.
I mean, that would certainly be the average result. Obviously any given group of 6 might or might not experience the average result, and with 2d6 having a wider standard deviation than 4d6, the average result will be less common than it is with that method. But yeah, theoretically in a group of 6 you’d be fairly likely to end up with one 18 and one 8 between everyone.

We use our own version of "standard" array: 17, 16, 15, 14, 12, 10. No feats at 1st to increase stats, unless coupled with some other benefits. Makes players feel better with understanding that stats of opponents will also be bumped up as well, but no one cares as its the pleasure that a players senses when seeing higher stats.

When I DM, it's a choice of point-buy or standard array. The current DM had us roll for stats, but I'm not sure if he's commited to that for future games.
