how does your character see in the dark?
not everyone has darkvision, so what do you use?
is there illumination that doesnt require a hand to use?

My guy has an everburning torch. He just puts it in his belt (or sometimes, sticks it into the top of his backpack so it sticks out over his head). It's heatless, so no problem.

Before he got it, he had the wizard cast light on his shield a lot.

I just finished playing a character who was a medieval sapper. He sported an iron "miner's helmet"--an iron helmet with a shiny steel reflector on the front. He'd snap the heads off of sunrods and put them in the reflector--working like a hands-free bullseye latern, minus the oil.

I cast darkness and revel in the shadowy illumination ...

Seroisly, though; flaming mook-on-a-stick lights up a cave pretty good, and has that 'leave me alone' vibe about it.

Continual Flame + Dull Grey Ioun Stone = Happy Human Spelunker
arent dull gray ioun stones useless? burnt-out?

i was thinking about getting continual flame cast on the tip of my sword, but i was looking for a clever non-continual flame possibility

Warehouse23's helmet lantern could work

Yeah--that's the point. They're cheap, they hover over your shoulder, and you can place a Light or Continual Flame on them.

In 3,5 the ioun stones that burn out turn grey and useless [doesn't sound like they would still float]. For some reason, they[wotc] took those cute little things away.

Sunrod in the belt is the norm early on. A few levels in, and there's bound to be someone in the party with a magic weapon that produces light.
