How do you see in the dark?

There are two characters I play. One has darkvision and the other is an epic alienist, so she has lots of ways to get darkvision.

Most of the high level pcs imc have darkvision or continual flame devices. My halfling group uses mostly torches (though three of the pcs have darkvision) and one of them has a gem of brightness.

Everyone in the party has taken the feat, "Echo Location," which compensates nicely. The only problem is that to roleplay the feat properly, the players have to repeatedly sound off as they roll dice, map, etc. It gets very noisy at the table. ...

"I roll to EEEEEEEEP hit the EEEEEEP orc chief. ... 13."
"That's a hit; fearless leader crumples. Janice, what's Throgmorton doing?
"He's already EEEEEEEP prepped his crossbow with EEEEEEEP a silver-tipped EEEEEEEP bolt."
"Hold on! EEEEEP I need to EEEEEP get Grundy out of the EEEEEEEEP way before you ..."
"What?!
"I said --"
"EEEEEEP my wizard is EEEEEEP..."
"Nat-20! That's gonna EEEEEEEEEEEEP hurt. Who's next? I said WHO'S NEXT?!"
"Did my EEEEEEEP spell go off before EEEEEP he ducked behind EEEEEEEEP the wall?"
"I've EEEEP got just EEEEP two hit points left. ... EEP."

We try to play in well-lit areas as often as possible.

OMG!!!

Okay, now that I've got my breath back... Our group is very fond of everburning torches. We usually have Handy Haversacks, so we have the torches poking out of a side pouch.
Casting "light" on a coin is another favorite, especially handy for tossing into darkened areas before we enter them. We've also had light on necklaces, though I wonder how annoying it would be IRL to have a light right under your chin?

One of my friends has suggested having a spellcaster cast "continual flame" on his own forehead, but somehow the idea of a guy walking around with a little flame burning just above his eyes seems a bit weird. On the top of the head, now, that might be cool - the character could look like Hellboy toward the end of the movie. :D Ooh, permanent continual flame on the top of your head... Good thing that doesn't actually produce heat, or continual flame would become continual burning hair!!

Mage with a Continual FLame on the top of his head? Dress him in red and yellow outfits with blousy sleeves and legs, and you could call him Firestorm... (especially appropriate if the Mage has a lot of transmutation type spells...)

Becareful in the dark. You could be eaten by a Grue.

Casting continual flame on the top of a staff and then covering it with a pouch or something when unneeded works. Sunrods are simple, and can be droped without worry of damage, or tied around a neck or something.

I had one character who cast light on the end of his spear so he could poke the light around. When he put it back, he left the tip out to see still.

One of my presently active characters is an asherati from Sandstorm. The race has an ability called body lamp which both solves the problem of illuminating the dungeon and makes him a prime target for every attacker that's fond of darkness. Since he is a bard and has neither high AC nor HP, this is occasionally inconvenient when he's knocked out and goes dark, but the rest of the time, it works admirably. For the other times, the dwarf has an everburning torch.

Everburning flame in the lamp of a miner's helmet with shutters. (Originally part of the lamp so that you could put it out quick if the flame turned blue...)

Continual Flame + Dull Grey Ioun Stone = Happy Human Spelunker
Wouldn't that quickly get nauseating, as the stone orbited around and around and around . . . (I'd go on, but I feel sick just typing it.)

Just about every PC in my campaign carries an everbuning torch. Many have darkvision. Some like candles, tindertwigs, or flaming arrows - don't ask me why - but none come to mind who have ever used a sunrod.

My favorite PC wears (a DM-created item) Eyes of True Seeing, which take care of darkness, darkness, and a whole lot more. Nifty item, but I had to leave that DM, or I would never have been allowed to use any PC he ran a game for again in any other game.
