How long do you like your D&D battles to last?

I like the good battles to last a minute or two. The longest battle I've ever been in was 54 rounds, and basically involved the wizard and rogue running around the battlefield for a while trying not to die until the rest of the group unparalyzes. That took about 40 rounds ... just for the first player to come to.

Short and sweet and get back to the game

But essentially most combats are decided in relatively few rounds; either the characters are going to cut-and-run or the monsters are, just to preserve bodies.

Equally, long players lead me and my players bored. If a combat runs over about 6 rounds, something has gone terribly wrong and most of them start looking at their watches. Then again, we are all refugees of too many miniatures and SPI games -- we tried to leave all of that in the past.

at least a full clip's worth... 30 rounds or more.

You mean a magazine ... a "clip" historically held 3-8 unprotected rounds. And I vote for a full basic load. :D

I prefer 5-6 rounds, which is just long enough to have a little maneuvering and blow-counterblow, without getting tedious. After 31 rounds of combat (a personal record), the DM's smoked and everyone else is worn out.

someone needs to revoke my license in the NRA. :o

oh wait, i don't have one. ;)

don't forget the exhaustion rules from page 11 of Chainmail by Perren & Gygax.

Last combat in my PbP game lasted 14 rounds (well 15, if you count the stabilizing after all enemies were defeated).

That was a fairly heroic, very tense and interesting combat, with quite a few turnings of the tides.

Superquick combats are fun sometimes, but the moderate length combats, not so long, that it gets boring, but long enough to create some tension, are the best IMHO.

Just long enough to reach the ground.

Oops! That's the answer I give when asked how long should a man's wanger be.

I always get these mixed up.

I personally like the medium battles, enough to strategize a little, but short enough to hopefully not get killed as easily.
I don't remember the longest battle in rounds, but in hours of gametime I think it was around 9 hours or so. (might be a bit more, I fell asleep near the end with it being 3 in the morning and all). :)
