How many monster books do you have?

Atlas wanted to include a lot of creatures from real world myths and legends that haven't typically been mined for monsters, and that sort of thing appeals to me.

Me, too. Now I have to buy it.

First of all, let me just say to Scott, I'm very impressed.

On to the topic at hand: 1e: MM, MM2, FF.
2e: Monstrous Compendiums 1-3, OA, Spelljammer, Ravenloft, Fiend Folio, Annuals 1, 3 and 4, Planescape Compendium 3.
3e: MM, CC2, plus a photocopy of Monsters of Faerun (definitely not worth the price imho). I've also got most of the rest of the stuff that has sections of monsters in it from WotC (OA, MotP, DDG, etc.)

I've also got a 2" binder full of downloaded or homebrewed monsters (LOTS of homebrews), including the Psionics Web Enhancement, Books of Daemons, Demons, Devils and Modrons from Scott over there, and monsters from aag to zaratan. I'm really looking forward to the ToH even though I already have a lot of what's gonna be in it in my binder; I could stand to have my binder be homebrews only eventually.

Well, I suppose you could have too many monster books...

I'm a long way away from that, though! :)

Perhaps, but I really think one dedicated monster book (the original MM) is all I really need. Beyond that, I'd rather invent things or use hostile NPCs. Heck, I generally prefer hostile NPCs as a villians.

Except for the 130 or so new monsters that are in the book and the monsters that have been fine-tuned (mainly arch devils, demon princes, etc.) :D

Believe it or not, I actually agree with you and play pretty much the same way. However, I love monster books just to read, look at the pictures and let ideas percolate into my head. Even campaigns with humanoid villains need monsters as mounts, arena challenges, creatures they like to hunt, creatures they occasionally unleash on the innocent, or even just a break from all the sneaking around, fighting in the dirty alleys and spying that my games usually end up being filled with.

Believe it or not, I tend to agree with this too. Using the MM and its various templates and stuff can sustain you with an almost infinite supply of possibilities to keep your players guessing.

But- as the "King of All Monsters" (as opposed to the King of All Media) I have to say...you can never truly have too many monster books. :D

Sorry, Scott. Everyone knows that Godzilla is King of Monsters, not you. Although, since that movie came from the extremely silly era of Godzilla movies, maybe you're excused if you decide to discount it. ;)
