As some background info for the world at some time in the past there had been a war in which magic of all kinds was commonly used. This led to a general collapse of civilisation and tracts of land contaminated by the magical residue.

There are certain areas of the world where magic simply won't function or where it can become so twisted from its original intent that antimagic is there only safe way to cross the area.

I voted for 25% but it is really less than that. It only comes up when we play at levels where it is available. Since we don’t do that very often, it doesn’t come up often. However, if I ever play or DM a game where that is within the capability of the characters, I usually take it as a spell or at least on scroll.

I really don't know how to vote on this. The reason is because my DMing style has changed so much over the years. Early on, because of my inexperience I would throw antimagic or nonmagic areas, critters and NPCs into my game because I didn't really know how to deal with [EDIT]PCs having powerful magics.[/EDIT]

These days I don't do it at all and if my players see it, it is very rare. I try to save those kinds of things for special situations or strong plot points. Right now I am DMing in the FR and have no intension of having them hit any magic-crazy/dead/anti areas any time soon. Only one of the PCs has spellcasting available but I want to make it available as much as possible.

I do have a plot that the characters may explore in the near future than has to do with anti-magic (as the party is very non-magic in general by class) but that will be totally up to them.

Could you be a little more specific? There's a difference between "How often does an anti-magic field appear in your game?" and "How often do you suprise your players with an anti-magic field not of their own making in your game?"

Because I rarely subject my players to such an event, but they've subjected it on themselves once or twice, as an effective counter-measure (once against a dominated player character, another time against the Lich Queen of the Githyanki).

we have encountered at least two no magic zones in our sessions.

one in
The Lost Tomb of Amarak from the web enhancement for Races of Faerun on the WotC site
and one in
the Banewarrens d20 by Monte Cook

There's the occasional beholder and occasional trap - which is why I put 25%, though really, it depends on the level. It tends to be much rarer at lower levels and more prevalent at higher levels, but still not THAT prevalent.

It is probably closer to 1/8 or less - I can only think of Beholders, spellcasters, and the occasional trap that has had anti-magic. (My favorite being traps that have long falls in anti-magic zones, to catch otherwise flying or feather falling folks.)

I'm interested in all instances regardless of how they came about.
In that case, in addition to the two instances mentioned above, which were player developed, the only DM-instigated instances have been from two encounters with Beholders and two encounters with Astral Dreadnoughts. The first two were garden variety versions, and the later of each variety was....not. Unless you consider an Advanced half-fire elemental Paragon Beholder as garden variety. :)

The spell antimagic field has come up once, and it nearly got the user killed -- a cleric battling a Yuan-Ti abomination cleric cast it on herself before launching straight at the Yuan-Ti, and quickly discovered that she was no match for the abomination. Only the judicious use of Hero Points saved the cleric.

Otherwise, antimagic has never shown up in my game. It just doesn't seem like that much fun to me.
