I created a character in one short campaign that used improved trip quite a bit. No wolf companion.
In other compaigns, it's only been due to monsters having it (like wolves)

just some ramblings of the nyrfherdr

I trip as often as I can as a warrior trip build... I also know, out of game, our ranger is getting a wolf companion later, so our game will see it even more.

Until I started up my current IH game, I think I saw one character try to trip a NPC in, what?, four years of D20 gaming. Just didn't come up that often.

Now I am seeing a fair amount of Trip, Sunder, and Bullrush attempts. Then again, that's more or less what IH is geared towards... :\

My group never does it, but I recently introduced an NPC (cohort of one of the PCs) who has Improved Trip. In the last combat he used it a lot. They were fighting wights with class levels that had really good armor. The NPC had no prayer of hitting in combat, but the wights have a lousy touch AC. He tripped them and the PCs could then hit a lot better, plus all those AoO.

So 2 game sessions ago I would have said "never" but now can say "Occasionally".

While they don't come up every game, they're still pretty frequent! As a DM, I'm pretty ruthless about using the various combat options when they're appropriate. As a result, my players have seen how effective they are, so they've taken to using them fairly regularly. They don't have the various Improved feats and they're still willing to suck up the AoOs. I enjoy the texture they give to the game.

One of the PCs in my game is a halfing spike chain wielder with Improved Trip.

It comes up every combat, but it doesn't work as well as he'd like...

Amazingly, never with the PCs in our group, but the enemies have started using them against us.

I was actually planning on a rogue/fighter trip specialist for the new campaign, but got delegated to be the cleric (by my own choice since the party had no healers). One player was planning on a spiked chain barbarian, but changed his mind and decided on a paladin at the last moment :( (without telling the rest of the group). If I knew that I might have gone with the rogue/fighter anyways
