Unless I use a monster with the Trip ability, it rarely comes up. Even with Tripping monsters, it has only come up maybe 6 times in nearly as many years.

Same here. It comes up regularly whenever someone in the party has Improved Trip or a similar ability. Otherwise it happens only when a monster has the same. Characters without at least IT almost never attempt to trip.

So perhaps the question could better be: how often is there a "tripper character" in your game?

IMXP it was something like average 1 PC every 5 groups in 3.0, and 1 PC in almost every group in 3.5.

I'm running a PC with the Expertise/Disarm/Trip Feat tree, so for me, its showing up almost every combat.

However, I'm the ONLY one running a PC or NPC using it...and he's my second one to do so (the first one died a painful death breaking through a door and falling into the chasm on the other side of it...).

Personally, I love it.

As a DM I use trip attacks all the time. Combined with a creature with reach, it's a really nasty tactic. As a player I used it all the time too.

In the game I ran a while ago that just finished the party only really survived the last battle because the spiked chain wielding shadowdancer kept a high level priest minion of the BBEG on his back the whole time within a Silence spell. Things would've been nasty otherwise.

In the other three games I'm currently in, I don't think it's ever come up. It's just not as good as disarm.

I've had players who used Improved Trip alot in the past. At the moment the party I DM for has a wardog among it's ranks which tries to trip on every bite. In the game I play in my warforged druid often summons wolves which do the same thing.

Occasionally my players will use a trip without having the feat. I even say one disarm to great effect using a heavy flail last session. :\

In the game I run, almost never. In one game I play in, there is a spiked chain tripper (bard!) and a druid with a wolf. In the other game I play in which is epic, there has been a lot of comments on how it doesn't scale well with level (a 12th level characters can trip a wizard 20 fairly easily, for example) and doesn't often get used, plus many PCs have Steadfast boots.

Cheers,
Blue
