The man with the probe
One of my favorite characters, a Barb/Cleric/Druid (Often called the barbarian sage by the party) slowly embarked on a quest to "Arm the Masses".
Now it wasn't intentional, but his view was "If we can't use it, we need to find someone who will help our cause and give it to them." In particular, one of the items given was an artifact level Axe which helped turn a merchant's son into a legendary dragon-hunter.
And even further beyond that, the GM liked the concept of that so much, that he built the need to "Arm the Masses" into the next campaign.
And he still kept the +1 Flaming Bastard Sword of Throwing, Returning, and Ghost Touch, just because it was too cool
(Some item like this now often seems to make it into the game now as well)
