One of my favorite characters, a Barb/Cleric/Druid (Often called the barbarian sage by the party) slowly embarked on a quest to "Arm the Masses".

Now it wasn't intentional, but his view was "If we can't use it, we need to find someone who will help our cause and give it to them." In particular, one of the items given was an artifact level Axe which helped turn a merchant's son into a legendary dragon-hunter.

And even further beyond that, the GM liked the concept of that so much, that he built the need to "Arm the Masses" into the next campaign.

And he still kept the +1 Flaming Bastard Sword of Throwing, Returning, and Ghost Touch, just because it was too cool  (Some item like this now often seems to make it into the game now as well)

"You see an evil altar with silver embossed runes"
"We pry out the silver to häve it melted down later"
"Behind the altar is a man, tied up. He looks to be prepped for sacrifice"
"We release him. does he have any jewelry?"

I'm in the camp of "really varies by character". Though I have noticed that games with very high wealth have less miserly characters, while games with lower wealth seem to have the gamut.

Let's take a look at my fighter 1 mage 5 eldritch knight 1.

DM gave us a dagger +3 of speed. No one in the group uses a dagger. It was meant for me so that I would have a melee weapon of some sort.

My guy uses a two handed sword.

I gave the dagger to a barbarian dwarf who uses a dwarved axe in one hand and the dagger of speed in the other. It was ugly.

Found a ring of protection +1.

Gave it to the dwarf. Figured I'm not going to be in combat enough to warrent using it.

Things like that.

How selfish they are depend on the characters they're playing. I've seen them be extremely selfish and extremely selfless, and anywhere in between. They're good RP'ers! :)
