Once I have the 4e core rules in hand and peruse them for a good long while, I will make my decision. At this point, I will probably continue as I did with 2e and skip the even-numbered editions of D&D. 3e/3.5e simply has more to offer than I have yet to explore. 4e, on the other hand, has yet to impress me at all.
Thus far, I have DMed 10 sessions of my new chat-based game "Heirs of Turucambi". The campaign is set beneath the surface of the Oljatt Sea on Oerth, the World of Greyhawk. PCs must have a natural swim speed and be able to breathe underwater without the use of magic. Will 4e let me convert my campaign? The BBEG in the game is a bard; will they be in the core rules? I run my game online; will the Mac OS be fully supported by the D&D Insider at launch? The World of Greyhawk is slated for an updated source book, right? All sentient races in the MM will be playable as PCs, right? Environmental supplements are already on the release queue, correct? You can see why I am not overly enthusiastic about 4e.
With the current 3e/3.5e releases, I can easily envision taking my game to epic levels. Incarnum, psionics, Tome of Magic, and warlocks are begging for expansion. From Heroes of Horror, the Dread Necromancer and rules governing nightmares are just waiting for their chance. Ur-Priests loyal to the Hag Countess await the day of her return. The dread armies of Panzuriel and Yeathan never had the opportunity to amass. Turucambi, The Sinking Isle, and The Jungle of Lost Ships await exploration.
I was a 1e old-timer, until 3e came along. The 3e/3.5e rules fit my style of DMing perfectly. From the previews I have seen, 4e and I do not seem to be compatible.
I'll see you at 5e.
