so, ummm...where can i find a thread on it?
or what is your opinion?
can you point me to a page to read in the PHB?
if you have a bow in your hand you don't threaten an area
so why would it be different if you had just your hands and didn't know how to use them?
i don't think you should be able to threaten an area if you don't have improved unarmed attack and you're weaponless

Someone with access to the search function might be able to find an old thread for you.

I'm in the "You don't threaten unarmed" camp.

The other camp point to two key sentences :

1. "Creatures threaten all areas into which they can make melee attacks."

2. "Unarmed attack: A melee attack made with no weapon in hand."

Someone here got close but didn't quite hit the mark. First of all, get spiked armor, it is useful in a grapple and can't be taken away from you. A powerful small weapon is nice, but may be lost in the fight and you might need something else to fall back on.

The big problem with starting a grapple is that if you get hit with the AoO then the attempt will fail and you are damaged. So what you should do is relieve your opponent of that AoO while doing something useful and use your remaining attacks for the grapple check.

This requires a bit of thinking and sometimes your opponent will offer you the chance on his own, but normally I do this little number.

Use your first attack to disarm your opponent, if he has a single weapon then you have little choice in which one. But if he is a two-weapon fighter, choose the one that is easiest to disarm (the smaller one), or if they are equal size the more powerful one.
Now if you have Improved Disarm, don't use the feat, open yourself up for the AoO and take it.

Now the actual results of the disarm attempt are not that important, the worst case is that you lose and your weapon is dropped, but that means nothing because your about to grapple anyway. If you actually disarmed your opponent, things get really neat because the grapple is going to work in your favor.

Now that the AoO is out of the way, attempt your grapple with the touch attack. Since they can't defend with an AoO you can move on to the grapple check. If you win this you get to move into your opponents square and start the grapple.

Now here is where the fun is, if you disarmed your opponent, that weapon is laying in the square you are at right now. If your foe breaks out of the grapple he has a choice of either moving out of the square or retrieving his weapon. If he flees he is short a weapon, if he tries to get his weapon you can use that AoO to pull him right back into the grapple.
