How to hide your alignment and get chicks.

Well, if the caster of Misdirection is travelling with a paladin carrying such a holy item, he doesn't need to have the item on his person, does he? Also, does holy water detect as good, allowing that to be a target for Misdirection?

That's true. But I wouldn't want to let my redirection-item out of my own control... what happens when the spell expires, I go to cast it again, and it turns out the paladin left his sword back at the inn today since we're visiting a pacifist temple?

It's a good question (heh), and I'd be inclined to rule 'Yes' - the Bless Water spell has the [Good] descriptor, and is described as filling the water with positive energy.

That's immaterial, though. The saving throw is for the subject of the spell, which is to say the person or object whose alignment is being hidden.

I was talking about making a will save vs the know alignment spell, not the spell used to protect against it.

Know alignment? Is that even in this edition somewhere that I'm not aware of?

In any case, the simple first-level spells detect evil/good/law/chaos offer no saving throw whatsoever.

It takes 3 rounds of concentration in order to detect the source of the evil.

At the first time the character is casting/using Detect Evil - initiative needs to be rolled.

After that many things can happen.
