How to tell if it is time to leave

Part of the problem is that for most of my group character development consists of feat trees and magic items.

In excess, this would make me want to poke my eyes out with a d4. I'd say that switching groups and genres would be lots of fun. It doesn't mean that you have to leave the other group and your friends forever, but taking a year off isn't a bad idea.

I used to be in a game where one player was having no fun at all. After every game he would call me and bitch, and before every game he would call me and moan - and he NEVER told the DM what was bothering him! Sigh.

Pc, would it bother you if I crashed at your place so I can play? ;) Might take me a week to get to boston. No car and all...;)

I think that the best advice anyone can give you is, if it stops being fun, it's time to take a break. I have [many] other hobbies and I tend to focus on them in cycles. Too much of anything can stop being fun after a while. Take a break and focus on something else you enjoy for a while and when you feel ready to come back, you'll probably find that you have a lot more fun.

You know, I had the same problem. And, like you, I am a roleplayer primarily, not a roll-player.

I tried quitting gaming for a while, because all the advice I received said to. I don't like DMming, I have tried it, and simply don't have the patience to put up with player BS. ;)

I was unhappy and bored most of the time while I was "taking a break."

I went back to gaming, same DM, same group. Within 2 game sessions, was having the same problem. In fact, I got up and walked out of the 2nd session in the middle, because the DM and one of the players were having an 1/2 hour discussion on how "monty" the player's character was. In the middle of the game. And not the "s/he should be toned down" type, but the "wow, that is so cool, you get 13 attacks a round, sweet!" type.

So, I tried a different group (same system) out of desperation for something to do. And wow, was it ever different.

I think that your problem may not be that you are burned out on gaming, but rather, you are burned out on the people you game with. Try switching groups for a while, different DM, different players, maybe even different system. It worked for me. :)

Or do what I'm going to do, crash with PC so I can teach him a little of my SL fu. ;) And he can show me the ropes in an all sorcerer campaign. ;)

I'm currently going through what you are, I'm only playing still because I drive half the group to the venue until my mate gets a car sorted out. I'm thinking of taking a break for a month, possibly more if required. I'm sick of rule arguing, the small amount of time we get to play and the fact that I'm pretty much unable to play characters I really want to due to old fashioned arguments. I see the splat books with characters that pretty much can be used in all campaigns bar out & out evil which are reserved for evil campaigns but when people are saying you cant play that because he uses spells which are evil, or he his morals wont go with my character background. Oh brother get with the times, why have the characters in the books if they're only there to look at the pretty pictures??
Anyway hope you get back into the swing of things soon, just hope I can get my feeling back for the game!
