How to Thwart Locate Object Spell

in the game i am running the pcs recently had a swoprd stolen from them by a villian.

now the kicker is the cleric has locate object and is using it a lot to hunt down the villian. now what spells could the villian use to thwart that?

What about Animate Object?

Is an animated object - hence Construct - treated as a creature and therefore ineligible for being found?

Also note that Locate Object is only Range: Long. Get it a couple of thousand feet away, and you're sweet.

Alternatively, put it in a bag of holding - Locate Object doesn't cross planar boundaries.

Why foil it? Why not make it part of the adventure? Why not let the heroes feel great for tracking the guy down and bringing him to justice with extreme prejudice?

Alternatively, if he suspects they may use locate object he could use it to set a trap and lure them into an ambush, so that the fight takes place on his own terms.

Also, it's range is only long. The villain just needs to be a mile or more away and they can't find it.
 

even worse, if they don't know the villians face, have him gift it to a noble or a good align person and let the pc's assumehe's the villian and kill him.
great for really big moral delimmas. hehehe

I though Bags of Holding where technically not a separate plane. Not even a Demi-plane, if memory serves.
 

The villan sells the sword to a rich merchant for an exorbitant price, a rare gem. The PCs track down the sword, but the merchant is unwilling to part with it unless he gets his precious gem back. Now the PCs are faced with either tracking down the villain without help of the spell (since they have not seen the object firsthand) to retrieve the gem and make a trade, or taking their sword from the merchant anyway, creating a new enemy.
