How will PC's make money in your world

Quests.

The town mayor says "protect the town from the goblins and we will give you a magic sword." The heroes protect the town from goblins. The mayor gives them a magic sword. Simple.

I never really liked "kill things and take their stuff," honestly. I prefer to reward acts of community-building and protection over random banditry and aggression.

The question asked begs a second broader question: what do the PCs do when they're not adventuring and-or what did they do before their adventuring career began?

The answer to both, and to the original question, is simple: haul out the old 1e "secondary skills" or "previous professions" (whatever it was called) table and roll. Voila! Problems solved. :)

what an odd question. I've never had any players of mine use the profession skill or secondary skills to make any real money. There were periods of down time where one person may have said "Well, I'm a bowyer / fletcher, so I'll make arrows for the next three months before our castle is invaded." But, that's about it. If they wanted money, an honest job wasn't what they were looking for.

Since there is no profession skill anymore (not that this rules out making a living in your down time) I wonder how PC's in some worlds will be making money.
If it's not in the rules, it's fluff: your fluff. Let them have whatever mundane profession is interesting to them and/or you. I suggest that this should generate enough money to allow them to have a regular, routine, safe life.

If "making money" is equivalent to any form of in-game advantage then perhaps it's a personal "quest" to gain a mentor, learn a skill, gather facilities to perform their profession.

The quest is adjudicated by the skills that the character does have and the XP reward feeds into the overall economy of rewards.

Kill things, take their stuff. I'm a traditionalist.
Totally!

I'm going to run a game that starts in an isolated community that doesn't use money. So the PCs really have no choice but to go out and loot, at least until they reach civilization.

Once the PCs get to a place where they can use money, the amount of money that they get may relate to what kind of food they bring for me at the DM table.
