D&D General How Would You Do a Dragon Themed Campaign?

Since I'm a big Birthright fan, I'd go with Dragon Bloodlines. There's 10 pure bloodlines, and PCs get some additional powers/features based on their Bloodline.

Cue a big war between the different dragonblooded families. Of course each bloodline is allied with their own dragons, so dragon riders are a thing.

First decide if it going to be
1 Dragon riders aka Pern, how to train, dragon lance
2 Ve wery wery quite we are hunting dragons
3. Dragons as rulers of region.
 

I'm running a dragon-themed campaign right now (maybe to publish don the road?) heroes are professional dragon hunters, in a world filled with dragons. Adult dragons have clear territory and some govern actual kingdoms. Humanoids live in small kingdoms and city states scattered about. Occasionally a young dragon will show and say, "Nice kingdom, think I'll take it." The party started by defending places against young dragons, and are now starting to move on to freeing lands from adult dragons. The end game will be taking on the ancient dragons. There are one of these of each color, they control major kingdoms and scheme against eachother as much as against humanoids.

Also the NPCs mostly top out at about 6th level equivalent, so the PCs are the only ones capable of taking on older dragons.
 

As th title says. We've had Dragonlance and Tyranny of Dragons both are flawed for different reasons.

The basic idea of both is decent enough. Buit Dragonlance told the tale of the Heroes of the Lance. And had things like Kender, Gully Dwarves, and tinker Gnomes. Which not everyone likes.

The Dragonlances themselves and riding dragons is fun.

And the problem with ToD is let's face it the execution of HotDQ. It's not hard to think of a different direction though.

Do how would you do it?

Since i am not afraid of kenders and gully dwarves although i would leave out the tinker gnomes and minotaurs and Irda, at least as playable races, and i was not very fond of the hulder folk either, i would convert dragonlance, but w/o the heroes but the PCs taking their place instead (The classic DL modules).
 

Something like a remake of "Councyl of Wyrms" but in the demiplane of Io's blood islands, and giants/titankin as archyenemies... and friendnemies sometimes. Used to be the supreme rulers and busy with their game of thrones, they discover they are being attacked by alien invaders from Far Realm.

Other idea is like Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire but the noble houses are fabulous monsters (giants, feys, dragons, hags, vampire's thralls) diguised as humans.

* Wouldn't you like a new class mixture of dracolyte, dragon shaman, dragonfire adept and dragon as monster class, dragonborn racial parangon and dragon disciple(prestige class). Maybe a subclass with incarnum soulmelds.

Yes that is a great idea, get your hands on council of wyrms and convert it. I own that one, it is (maybe) a more smooth approach on humanoid/dragon relations, but it is especially useful if the players want to play dragons.
But it requires players with a high level of system mastery and some work to convert it (lair/legendary actions? etc)
 

Return of Arkosia.

The story is about the return of an ancient dragon ruled, dragonborn populated empire.

Start with some campaign acts.

Stage 1: Prophesy. (Rumbles of what is to come)
Stage 2: Dracolich Cult. (Dracolich seeks to warp prophesy to own new empire)
Stage 3: Cataclysm. (Prophesy triggered, world shook)
Stage 4: A New World (Consequences of returned empire)

Mechanics:
We want dragonriding.

Because even small dragons are a bit strong, we need to scale up PCs without leveling them up (because I want plot and advancement after dragonriding).

Dragonbond:
1) Your HP are maximized.
2) Your attributes are all increased by 2, as is your max.
3) When casting a spell that has increased effect at higher slot levels, you get 1 higher slot level for free.
4) When doing a weapon attack, it does 1 extra weapon die of damage (so 4d6 for greatsword)
5) Once per day you can take a short rest as an action.
plus per character toys (rogues, for example, get the short shrift from the above)

That should boost the "CR equivalent" of PCs so low level dragon mounts aren't crazy imbalancing.

This would trigger around stage 2, against the dracolich. The dragon bonded to a PC would sometimes be busy elsewhere, and sometimes join up for an adventure arc.

I would leave the possibility of Arkosia returning as an ally, foe, undead corrupted empire, etc up to the choices and actions of the players.

Probably needs a seperate foe to show up, like devils or demons or the chained oblivion whatever, in stage 3. To shake things up.

Dragon campaign

The campaign is built around the rebirth of an ancient fallen empire ruled by Dragons. The PCs can change how the prophesy is fullfilled and join many sides in the world-changing consequences.

Book 1: Dreams of Dragons

  • Prophesies and Rumours of what is to come.
  • Initial seeds

Factions:
  • Dragonborn Sage who is looking into ruins
  • Kobold prophet who knows what is coming
  • Church of Ioun seeking out whispers
  • Mercenary Guild, blades for hire
  • Merchants concerned about trade
  • The Prophesy and fragments from it

Beat:
* Kobolds attempt to create a true dragon, get a warped monster

Climax:
* A true dragon egg hatches. Someone bonds to it, or consumes its life essence.
** Possibly a PC. Bonding or Consuming gives a similar huge buff to PC power level
** Possibly an NPC. Too bad, so sad.
** Agent of Dracolich should show up, out of left field.

Book 2: The Shadow of Arkosia

* 4 major factions
** Dracolich left over from Arkosia wants to swallow the 13 heralds
** Arkosia herself, rising
** The mortal kingdoms, afraid of Arkosia
** The PCs themselves

* Major plot elements:
** Race to the 13 heralds between the major factions
** Bond, Consume or Suppress

Book 3: End of All Things

Factions
** Reborn Arkosia (either under Dracolich, or not)
** The Ancient Enemy of Arkosia
** The mortal kingdoms, if they are left
** The PCs themselves

  • World torn asunder by the rise of Arkosia
  • Ancient enemy of Arkosia rises to oppose her
  • Players could destroy both, neither, or either of the two powers

Book 4: A New World

  • Players get say in how the world rebuilds
  • Players then defend their choices against other forces

Many years ago I was working on a setting in which the ruling class was all dragons in human form. Showing someone your dragon form was considered crude and distasteful, sort of the equivalent of losing control of your emotions. It was only appropriate between close family members and enemies engaged in mortal combat. Outlaw dragons were much more lax about this.

The seven dragon kings/queens were Ao the Wise, Echidna the Free, Gorynich the Authority, Jörmungandr the Mighty, Leviathan the Ancient, Shesha the Devout, and Vouivre the Beautiful. Each ruled over a kindgom of humanoids, with a different sort of real-world-culture analog. The three most powerful outlaw dragons were Apophis the Devourer, Tiamat the Corruptor, and Typhon the Destroyer, who would serve as antagonists within the setting. However, within the campaign, all the dragons were antagonists of a sort, since the PCs were supposed to take the side of the mortal humanoid subjects. Some of the dragon kings/queens were nastier than others.

I set the idea aside because running a campaign of international intrigue ala Game of Thrones is a fairly daunting task and I'm not sure I'm up to it right now.
