Hurl Weapon question

Ok I have a question with Hurl Weapon barbarian feat.

If barbarian is holding a +1 waraxe in his off-hand and takes hurl weapon (see below for description) will it return to him if he throws it? It seems like it would as it treats the weapon as a thrown weapon, which should return to the owners hand if magical...

You can use any one-handed off-hand weapon as a heavy thrown weapon. Normal range for weapons you wield this way is 5 squares, and long range is 10 squares.[/sblock]

The wording seems pretty clear here: You can use the weapon as a heavy thrown weapon, and using it as a heavy thrown weapon lets it return.

If it was worded such that it
a) gave you a "Hurl Weapon" power that didn't specify it returned,
b) said something like "you may use ranged powers with a melee weapon. The weapon's range is considered to be 5"

it may not, as it limits what it confers, but as is it gives it everything except the 'heavy thrown' keyword.

A magic one-handed off-hand weapon will return when thrown, with the Hurl Weapon feat, as it is considered a heavy thrown weapon.

I don't see anything controversial about it.

It works only if the barbarian has the whirling slayer feature. That's the only time the waraxe can be considered and off hand weapon. And even that is a little fuzzy. RAW it works since you "treat it as an off hand", but the Ranger feature, arguably the same thing, just says you can wield a one hander as if it were an off hand. The Barbarian feature seems compatible with Hurl Weapon, yet the Ranger one wouldn't. I'd clear it with your DM.

As for your question, I wouldn't have problems with it. Otherwise, no 4e Aegis Fang.

Yeah I'm a whirling slayer. I would be lying if I didn't say that Wulfgar didn't have some influence on my choice. If it didn't work I could always just MC fighter and take Dreadnaught.

I completely missed that... I assumed that the axe was an off-hand weapon.
