Well, the first movie's ending sucked.
Hence, a) we shouldn't waste our time caring, and b) see A.

I dislike it because it used the name of a book which had a much more creative and compelling ending, so comparably the one they released in theaters was pretty terrible.
As I said elsewhere, it's like changing the ending of 300 so Zeus comes down from the heavens and destroys the Persians with lightning bolts, saving the Spartans. Sure, it might be a cool scene (if done well), but it wouldn't be as good of an ending. And, almost as importantly, it wouldn't fit the first 3/4 of the movie.

No, he was a legend because he became to the non-bloodlusting survivors(which weren't even in the movie) the same as Vampires are to us. A legendary monster who may kill you in your sleep.Reveille said:

Now, it was a good, enjoyable movie, but by taking the name of the book it implied some token of faithfulness to the story that previous films did not have. Ironically, even Omega Man was more true to the story than I am Legend was.
Sequal? Meh, his kid grows up and continues his fathers work. I'll rent it.

It's a shame, but it seems like Matheson is never going to see a faithful adaptation of his book in his lifetime. If he wasn't bitter about it before (and he sure seemed to be), I'm sure he is now.
As for the spoiler-y thing Reveille mentioned, it didn't happen in the book and doesn't change the way the infected society saw Neville. Isn't the monster supposed to die at the end?
Anyway, it's a really good book. Well worth a read.
