I am looking for a D20 prestige class.

First Post
I am looking for a D20 prestige class. The character is from a northern country, which is emphasized by my cheesy Russian accent. His name is Aleksandr Volkov, he's a Ranger/Cleric hybrid (rescue ranger), and will have a St. Bernard animal companion. Yes, he even wields a "warhammer and sickle" with the two-weapon fighting feat. I've been reading some prestige classes and not been too impressed. The problem I'm having is that all of the prestige classes seem to be either stupid powerful, or just stupid. If anyone can help me by suggesting a balanced prestige class from any source I would really appreciate it.

I was looking through my stuff and reached the conclusion that I don't know what kind of prestige class you are looking for. Nor what books I could use. I mean there is always Crystal Keep for prestige classes. Or the prestige class index on the wizards website. So if you could help me I may know of something that you could use.

I looked through these WotC books, Sword and Fist, Masters of the Wild &, Defenders of the Faith. I did not like any of those prestige classes. Many of the prestige classes I found were too archer oriented or DUMB like the Master of Chains, Oozemaster &, Divine Oracle. I was hoping for a much more playable prestige class, possibly similar to the character description that I gave. So if you have come across a non-WotC prestige class that would work I am open too any suggestions. Or if I have missed a playable WotC prestige class.

I am going to have to read through the Frostburn book tonight, thank you for that suggestion.

I had replied to this before the crash. There are two prestige classes I think you would like.

The first is from Frostburn, and it is called Winterhaunt of Iborighu. You would probably be Chaotic Neutral if you went this route. They desire to make the whole world into an icy domain like their homeland, and follow a Frost diety. They have full divine spellcasting progression, and various cold powers. The picture even shows them holding a wicked looking sickle, and the class has a russian feel to it.

The second is from the Book of Exalted Deeds, and is called Sentinel of Bharrai. Your alignment would need to be "any Good" for this route. They are a nature-oriented class that worships the "Great Bear". They have full divine spellcasting progression, and various bear-related powers and nature-related powers (though not like a Druid, more like a Ranger).

Hope that helps. I have some of the modules from the Russian-themed setting that one of the third party d20 writers came out with, so I will see if I can find anything with that. I've been meaning to get Frost and Fur: The Explorer's Guide to the Frozen Lands. That probably has some more good Russian-themed prestige classes as well. If you have any interest in seeing their products, here is a link:

From Frost and Fur: The Volkov (pagan priests) class, vedma (witch) prestige class, vorozhei (fortune teller) prestige class, and znakhar (healer) prestige class, might be up your alley (I have not seen it yet so I don't know).

FR's Faiths & Pantheons has the windwalker PrC. It looks to be designed for clerics & rangers.

Mechanics-wise, it has full BAB, good Will save, & full spellcasting advancement, but a lot of requirements.

Although it's designed as a PrC for Shaundakul (portfolio includes travelling & travellers, exploration, caravans and the wind, as well as mining and miners), if not playing in FR, then you could modify it to fit your campaign world (like changing the Weapon Focus: greatsword requirement to WF: warhammer or sickle.

Are you looking to take a prestige class to expand on one aspect of your character or are you looking at taking a prestige class just to take a prestige class? If you want to concentrate on one aspect of your character, Prestige classes are a good way to do it. If you just want to take a prestige class, until you know WHY you want to take a prestige class, you won't be able to find one you want. When you tell us why you want to take the PrC and what aspect you want to focus on, them we can help you a bit more.

Personally, I'd stick with the Rescue Ranger thing you've got going with the multiclass Ranger Cleric. As long as people don't start referring to you as "Chip" or "Dale"

I really appreciate the input and advice, I thank you all.

I suppose the reason I was asking for help in the first place is because, when I DM I rarely need prestige classes. So I am not too familiar with them. I now have the wonderful opportunity of playing a game, rather than running it. So I was hoping a fellow gamer would have come across a prestige class that mirrored what I desired. Which was, to find a prestige class that perfectly blended a ranger and cleric to match this character concept. There is no one aspect of either class that I was looking to focus on.

I will take a look at all of these suggestions, and make a choice this weekend. Thanks again.
