I have ANOTHER problem!

Explorer
Yep, you read that right! I have another computer problem that I don't know how to fix. Basically anytime I try to use Internet Explorer's EXE it doesn't start up. It seems to work fine when I view html files and such, but trying to go through the exe just doesn't cut it. When I try it and use the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys to see whats running, it shows Iexplorer running then its gone. It seems a bit slow when working but that might be the modem acting up or the computer is low on resources.

Had some problems with a few viruses changing my startup page and other problems and other things, but I've managed to fix those myself. So it might be because of that, but I'm not sure.

I've tried virus and adware scanners (AVG 6.0 and Ad-Aware 6.0, respectively), but nothing comes up. Just before I posted this, I tried the adware scanner and it froze halfway through, but I did do a scan a few days ago on the system folders and other such items.

I also looked online for anything and I found something about "Local_Host" in the registry or some other system important file, and thought that it could be that, but I don't know where to find it.

I haven't tried reinstalling IE yet, casue I'm not sure what plugins I have for it. I might switch to a different browser, I've heard of Netscape's browser, Mozilla, Opera (I think), but I don't know whats good.

My computer is on Win98 2nd Ed. and I hope the solution doesn't need a CD cause my drive is shot.

What did it say about the local host?

I couldn't find anything about the Lcoal Host. I remember seeing it once, but I don't know where it is. The site I saw them talking about it said something about "system32/drivers" or something. I was hoping someone could point me to it.

Can you take a screenshot of the error?
If so then contact me.. I want to see.

There isn't any error message, its just that the program just doesn't start. I click the shortcut and then its looks like it will start, but then nothing.

There's a nice, fun program for W98SE called System File Checker. Do you have your original install disks?

If so, go to Start --> Run --> type "SFC" and click ok.
Click "Extract one file" and click browse. Select the IExplorer file, and click ok.
Click start.

It will prompt you for the install disk etc.

If that doesn't work, you can always run SFC to "scan for altered files" and replace as needed, but it's probably about as much work to back everything up and reformat.

In system32/drivers/etc there are two files called "hosts" and "lmhosts". These are used to map computer names to IP addresses. Some spyware programs probably mess with these files. Jerks. :)

For most Windows users, your hosts file should have only one entry:

localhost 127.0.0.1

Your lmhosts file should be empty.

However, this doesn't sound like it would cause the problems you're describing, so I'd look elsewhere.
