This game is so dynamic as far as rules go. I have been having a great deal of fun with 3E and the OGL has opened up so many ways to contribute to the rules that I wonder if there is a need to buy more "official" rules. Many of the variant rules that have been posted here and elsewhere, as well as in group rules discussions, have served my DMing purposes . That being said, some rules changes posted by users to the web, and from in group players, have been found to be terrible after using them in play. The point being that weeding out good signal from the noise can be time consuming in such a dynamic system.
Plus the fact that 3.5E is going to be in the SRD. It is well worth my time to download, edit the way I want, and print. Or just download and pick out stuff to shove into or replace the 3E rules that clarify or balance things (like classes, AOO, spells). Since the base mechanic is there I'm hoping that might be easy enough.
Sometimes I wonder if it might be less of a headache to go back to a "dead" D and D system like 1E (never played 2E). As long as me and the players are having fun it doesn't really matter what system we play. Plus the old rules are so inexepensive and available as downloadable files from the web that just about anyone can afford them. I mean 5 bucks for a 1E e-file PH? That's great!
As far as 90 bucks for three beautiful books I don't think that's a bad deal. But 90 is 90. The other concern is that - I will go out on a limb here and bet that - there will be just as much discussion, controversy, and on the fly changes in interpretations about this rules set as there has been for 3.0. That's with any kind of rules, really, but with "living" rules there is a lot of background noise to wade through. When I game I would rather focus on playing the game than playtesting a bunch of new rules changes. At least with 1E I think there has been enough time (and veterens that have posted tried and true rules fixes) to develop good, thoroughly tested changes that can be incorporated into the game without having to go a month or two (or longer!

) before realizing that the rule was just not designed well.
My 2 cents worth on why I will not buy the new rules books.
