The creature is speaking a language that predates both of the languages in question. As such, the characters get their proficiency bonus to the check, and the amount of information I give in response to that - and how accurately it confirms to what the creature is trying to say - is based on that check. That's all. This is an ancient language so the DC is a bit higher. If you make a 10 on a language related to yours you'll succeed at at least getting things across. I'd say a 20 was enough to actually understand what it's saying, as cryptic as it is. Kuniuric being the language derived from the language derived from this language, and Dunyanic being a particular language developed by an isolated group of monks from it.

Hopefully it's fun and not too distracting.

His heart is racing! Powerful magics seem to be at play here he thinks to himself. Trying to control and hide is exitement, and in his best Kûnüric while trying to mimic some of the differences he just heard, Thael says formally." My lord, will you allow my humble self to invoke some minor magics to better understand you. I am affraid that the language I speak is also twisted, and it is my goal and desire to fully understand your words."

Thael then says to the others, while bowing in respect towards the artifact "From what I understand, I believe that the artifact confirmed that the girls is the one we are looking for. I will have to perform a magical ritual to make sure I understand it properly".

OOC: Assuming that the response is positive or non-existent, Thael will cast comprehend languages as a ritual

Once complete, Thael says bowing "My lord, I apologize for my distorted speech, but now at least I will understand you properly" he straightens and continues. "May I humbly inquire as to what has been disturbed and you wish to quell? Perhaps our humble group can be of service."

OOC: What I wouldn't do for telepathy right now ;-)
So Thael is basically going to try to talk to the thing to learn as much as possible. He is an academic, and is genuinly interested in the artifact. He will show proper respect, even some deference, since he is so attracted to magic.
I have a feeling that the book in the inn would have been useful to have here, but that's for another time ;-)

OOC: An exclamation point appears over the bronze mask.

"My memory fails me. I seek an elju (book?), one to accompany my failing memory. As time passes, I forget more and more of the past. The vile rule the mansion! The dolour rules the minds of those who live! They have become erratic, and there is little I have left in me. I must feel something, anything at all, so that I may see the way to ending this turmoil! Something must leave a mark on my soul, a breath, before all is lost!"

Thael's heart beats fast, he got an answer, although it is very cryptic. Magics, beautiful magics at work. He forgets a girl is under the mask, and that a boy is unconscious nearby. It simply doesn't matter, he is in the presence of ancient magics!

He presses on: "My lord, can you please describe this elju, so we may prove our worth and bring it to you?"

OOC: The obvious question is: does it match the book at the inn?

"I still cannot make anything out. Good work scholar."
Ersarkess looks over the thing and the girl. "Ask it to release the girl and let us deal with the problems. We can escort the kids out and clean this place out. Maybe it can communicate without covering the head of the communicator."

OOC: speaking in common so that maybe it doesn't understand :)

"Describe? My kind do not see as you do. There is no 'paint', no 'color', only depth... touch... song. Elju is... the one to whom you recount your stories. The soul that carries your soul. They must remind you of the past, so that you do not forget. To recount your existence, before you become lost in the dolor. I must have one, I am losing myself to this madness."

It seems to ignore Ersarkess comment.

OOC: Does Thael have any idea what he is talking about?
history [roll0] + [roll1] from guidance
arcana [roll2] + [roll3] from guidance

edit: I love these double proficiency bonuses! ;-)
