Ideas for a Chaotic/Good char..

Pure RP restriction, nothing to do with game balance. Adapt the PrC to suit your deity, and clear with your DM, who hopefully won't give you crap about it.

If Ordained Champion is out, just go straight Cleric. Good enough for melee brute any day of the week!

This is one of the times I'm not so sure.

Reason being that War Domain grants weapon focus and proficiency with the deities favored weapon. Some weapons are "more equal" than others.

Being able to create a war deity and list the Spiked Chain, Scythe, or similar weapon as their favored weapon could be... unbalancing.

??? Who said anything about creating a deity? Whatever CG-fitting deity (with the War domain) the PC in question chooses to worship, adapt Ordained Champion to suit that. That's all.

Also, game balance-wise: Scythe shouldn't be a problem, really. It is a martial weapon after all. Spiked Chain, on the other hand, sure, but I don't know of any deity with the War domain in any campaign setting who has a Spiked Chain as their favored weapon.

But isn't that all just RP Fluff?

I mean this guy said it best:

Pure RP restriction, nothing to do with game balance.

Restricting characters is really just about the role playing aspects, and has nothing to do with balance. Despite the fact that which deity the character worships would have a direct mechanical impact on which weapon they would be using.

I'm not sure I understand the problem... restricting a PrC to certain deities is, to me, a pure RP restriction. Worshipping a different god, but taking the same divine-oriented PrC, shouldn't be a problem, since it has no bearing on game balance.
However, if somebody tries to ignore RP restrictions (like deity worshipped) to gain a mechanical advantage (like getting Spiked Chain proficiency for free), I don't condone that.

A Scythe is a weapon roughly equally powerful as a longsword, Greataxe etc. - all are martial weapons, and from a mechanical perspective, are thus roughly equal in power. A Spiked Chain, on the other hand, is an exotic weapon. Becoming proficient with it is usually much harder than with a martial weapon. So I wouldn't allow a homebrew god with the War domain and Spiked Chain as his/her favored weapon.

I WOULD allow a PC worshipping not Heironeous, but a different (non-homebrew) god with the War domain, though. Which deities are available under these criteria depends on the setting. In the Forgotten Realms, for example, you could totally be a CG Cleric of Tempus - and I'd allow you to take up the Ordained Champion PrC if you so desire.

2 cents...

Kord, Chaotic Good deity of Valor and Battle, has the 2 handed Greatsword as his favored weapon.

A Cleric of Kord is very, very good at combat and tons of fun to play.

Divine Favor stacked on top of Divine Power and you're good to go. Shove the Fighter and Barbarian aside and show him how melee is done!
Spiritual Weapon as the symbol of Kord's fury to assist you in battle. It's like having a combat oriented animal companion that flies, cannot die, made of Force, that's a Greatsword!
any other spells that boost AC or give you extras for combat are fair game, but just these 3 spells will make you a solid melee character.

You don't need to engage in the Persistent metamagic brokenness to play a combat Cleric well (but you could, if your DM allows). May sure all your allies know that you're not tossing Cure spells in mid-combat, you've got better things to do, like break faces.
