...without it being a famous figure or notorious killer, check out this story on CNN.com - WARNING: not for the easily upset animal lover. As far as I'm concerned, these kids are flat out evil, but especially considering their ages, they likely won't do a day of jail time even if caught. Discussions of what I'd like to do to them withheld based on possible lack of grandmother approval....

I get so mad about stuff like this...

Behavior at this age is almost always an indication of how they will act as adults. Kids like this should be flat out removed from society. Y'know, we don't exile enough people these days.

Well, we kinda ran out of places to send 'em. All we've got left is to drop them in Antarctica or blast them into space.

Austraila won't take them anymore... But seriously, I agree, someone who would do something like this at any age has serious problems, but I don't for the life of me know what could be done about it. I doubt prison or even juvi would exactly help the situation - they'd be out even worse than they went in. Community service seems like a bad joke, and I don't know enough about criminal psychology to know if any level of therapy could help. Any 'permanent' solution would be too disturbing for words.

And the scariest thing is, even if we know for a fact what this says about "what they are like" or "what they are capable of in the future" without being able to strictly quantify that feeling, a criminal justice system that bases its decisions on those sort of judgements and predictions rather than the actions currently taken isn't one I want to live under. :\ Makes a part of me long for a good old fashioned vigilante antihero, but I know that won't work in th real world either.

Pretty sickening. I don't know what kind of punishment is appropriate for that. How about 10 minutes in a locked room with a hungry tiger. Let 'em find out what happens when the animal's bigger than they are... :]

Well I saw the story on CNN last night as well. Was even more bothersome for me as I just brought home a new beagle puppy on Sunday, and my two mini dauchahuns may as well be puppies at 9 pounds each.

As for punishment, I'll just say "An Eye for an Eye." and leave it at that.

If I recall correctly, animal tortue is only one of several markers for someone being a serial killer. Admittedly, it's messed up, but just one doesn't mark you for life.

I must say I'm a bit upset by everyone who says exile them or hurt them or what not. That is, IMO, just as bad as what they have done. Rather, I think a combination of jail and rehabilitation with counseling is the better way to go. Who we are today doesn't dictate who we are tomorrow, it just suggests. Rather than making these kids' lives even more messed up, why don't we try and do the right thing and make them better?

Maybe it's just too novel a concept though.

I'm studying to be a Psychologist, and I can't discern too much about the situation without proper information on a suspect/perp. BUT I can say that for someone to do this, they would have to have either developed a sinister hatred of puppies somehow, have not recieved the proper socialization/upbringing to control themselves, and/or there is a symbolism here.

I can see two likely scenarios here.

Symbolic Displacement of Revenge -
The dogs were killed/maimed through detonation of explosives within their mouths. This suggests a likelyhood that the perpetrator(s) had experienced a significant trauma involving a dog I.E. being attacked, mauled, chased down, etc. The dog may have disfigured or greivously injured this person primarily through biting, chewing, the damage being mainly inflicted by the dog's mouth. Now, this would relate to the killings/maimings of these animals in that perhaps the dog which did the attacking had recently sired this litter of puppies. This act of revenge was centered on the puppies and their mother, as the dog which did the attacking would have been put down, removing the chance for direct revenge on the part of the attacked, so they went for the next best thing, it's "wife and kids". And what better way to get back at a dog which mauled you than to attack the mouths of those "wife and kids"? The explosives merely offered a more effective and brutal revenge, which was justified in the eyes of the perp.

The other scenario is that these were just a group of kids who for a whole slew of reasons have developed into pitiless, merciless, sadists (which bar no argument is the fault of the parents and to a lesser degree, other such adult figures, like it or not), and this was just another act of amusement for them, at the expense of a dog and her pups.

Whichever may be the case, the simple fact is that these people simply cannot be trusted to function safely within our society, and IMO, should be taken out into the middle of the Arctic Sea and tossed overboard. If they turn up alive somewhere, then we re-enact a certain ending scene of Wanted: Dead or Alive starring Rutger Hauer as the guy who pulls the pin. If you've seen it, you know what I mean. If not, go watch it, it's a good movie.

Not sure that I agree that is chaotic-evil (course I do not believe that chaotic-evil can exist in intelligent life) but it is truly evil (which actually means that it would be neutral-evil, btw according to most systems). I do not believe we can fully understand the concept of chaotic evilness, most of the things we think of as evil are more neutral or lawful evil. To be chaotic evil they have to do evil for *purely* no reason whatsoever. These kids must have some reason for what they did, prolly trauma or mental illness, but that is still a reason, it is not *evil without reason* which defines chaotic-evil.

BTW. I think anyone who harms animals for reasons other than food/equal sport (ie hunting a bear with a couple knives or a pistol where the bear has just as much chance of killing you as you killing him) is lower than dirt. Animals are the only true innocents around to me, humans have too much historical baggage for even children to be completely innocent like animals are.
