Ignore Button

First Post
It seems like there are a lot of people that seem to want to get rid of certain threads, yet the majority, or at least the moderators are all for the keeping of these threads. The disagreement would easily be solved, if we could Ignore threads just as there is an Ignore Poster button. I don't know if its even possible, but the people who are complaining about the threads crowding up the first page of a forum wouldn't see the treads and would therefore be able to get on, while only those who want a thread have to view it. Am I being crazy?

Here is a suggestion; why not just ignore the threads you wanna ignore.

I never had anyone on my ignore list, but I still ignore everything certain people sys about some subject where I totally disagree with them.

My first thought is to agree with Piratecat and AGGEMAM - if you don't want to read it, don't read it. People need to exercise their own free will. Though the board is addicting...

On second thought, I can see where it would get annoying if you to see a bunch of topics in General that have little relationship to RPGs.

On third thought, I think that the various tags ([OT] and such) really need to be used more often by board members, and especially in General. It would make it easier to search for all specific threads as well (say, all the Hivemind stuff, since they use tags well).

On fourth thought, I think too much. :)

On fifth thought, I'm looking through General right now, and I see a bunch of topics which really could go elsewhere, or at least need OT tags. For a couple of examples, but say "So how's life treating all of you?" really needs an OT tag. "Vin Diesel" is barely RPG related, and since he's a film star should probably go in Movies and such. Perhaps a dedicated moderator for General wouldn't be such a terrible idea, so they can do stuff.

Don't be smarmy, he's asking about an ease of use issue. I personally get tired of hunting down the second page for a thread I'm interestd in because high traffic fluff gets pushed to the top of my attention. I have no trouble ignoring threads in terms of not clicking on them, but you can't "ignore" the fact that such threads end up at teh top of your page, making you search for the ones you want to read.

The ability to rank threads by priority rather than always going down through the last posted list would be a nice option. (whether thats by tagging the threads you want at the top or the ones you want at the bottom). If thats a more complicated option than the administrators want to provide, thats fine, but why these silly misinterpretations?

No need to label someone "smarmy," KB - that's sort of rude. Two options you have:

1. Sort by # of views, or # of replies. Just click on the orange title headings at the top of a column.

2. Subscribe to a thread. That way, you can access them from your User CP panel.

As opposed to repsonding to someone asking about a technical feature (as old as usenet) by implying they were too dumb to stop actively reading threads they were disinterested in?

Hey, if you're gonna call me out on as tame a description of that behaviour as "smarmy" I should just say what I really think... ;)

I took no offense by it since, because I do not know what it means.

But seriously, using the ignore button, and even more so by inventing a thread ignore option, is really lame.

I have a few people that I ignore on certain subjects, and don't on others. You never know when there might be something interesting in a thread, you didn't think you wanted to read.

If you're tired of running down to 2nd page to check whether your thread has been replied to or not, I suggest subscribing to it.

Warning: I'm about to start sounding like an archtypical parent.

Let me get this straight - you have at your fingertips, a mere few clicks away, free of charge, a phenomenal resource of information dealing with a wonderful, creative, and fulfilling leisure activity. And actually taking a bit of time to scan through a list or read a second page is tiring? Folks need it made even easier?

Hey, come on! There are still people on the planet without electricity in their homes, much less personal computers or resources to spend on RPG materials!

Yes, sometimes folks do need a little bit of a reminder like AGGEMAM gave. We get so used to instant gratification it isn't funny. Reading through the thread titles isn't hard. Reading a whole whopping second page isn't tiring. Walking behind a plow all day is tiring. Surviving to adulthood without antibiotics is hard. If a little pleasure reading and mouse-clicks are too inconvenient for you.... Well, then the species is in a lot of trouble.

Thus endeth the parental-style ranting.

no, I'm afraid my parents weren't that ridiculous....

We are here on the board. We are in the Meta forum, where we talk about the board. We are having a discussion about something that might or might not make the use of the board more pleasant for some of us.

Bringing up the "starving kids in Japan", as they say, is just silly. It wasn't even over the top enough to be funny. And it couldn't possibly be taken seriously unless you made those sort of comments every time someone discussed ease of use for a RPG product, which I know you don't.

What is the major allergy to discussing board design like mature users? I have a killfile on usenet, I have a filter on my free email reader, and whoever does the coding isn't spending the time this would take to volunteer for the peace corps instead. If you don't like the idea, ignore the thread and don't use the function if it ever becomes available. But you guys are seriously weirding me out here....
