Alanna Morwyn
Alanna grew up in the moors and lochs of Thuria. The only daughter of a minor nobleman, Alanna wanted for little as a child.
The Morwyn family are local heroes and their ancestors were awarded their lands for leading an uprising against their former Tordorean rulers and for the protection of their lands from bandits and creatures of a less savory sort in the years after Thurian liberation. The Morwyn line has a strong sorcerous heritage. While none from this line have truly reached Wizard status it is not uncommon for relatives of Alanna to know a few spells or cantrips. This is true of Alanna’s parents who are both fairly accomplished mages.
Her families’ lands are small, encompassing Loch Shir and the misty hills and moors surrounding it. The hamlet of Lyningsgale rests on the northern shore of Loch Shir. This sleepy little town is a small rest stop on the southern trade route that houses an inn, general store and black smithy. The tavern regulars are local sheep farmers and hunters from the hills. Farmers from the outlaying moors are a common sight on weekends for the open market and festivals.
Her rural upbringing kept Alanna grounded. She never put herself above the local children even though she is of noble birth. It was not uncommon to see Alanna working and playing hand in hand with the other girls of Lyningsgale. Alanna was an adventurous child, never one for sitting in one place for very long. She spent many hours exploring the lands of her home, whether it was on her own or with the one of the local Shepard’s or shepardesses. While she practically drove her parents crazy with her disappearances and the lack of disciple when it came to her studies, she was incredibly handy with tools, and they found out, while scrying one of her many unauthorized outings, Alanna was a natural with the pistol.
Alanna was around 12 years old when she had run off with one of her friends, a local girl and shepardess named Megan. It was Megan’s first trip out alone with the family sheep and Alanna came along to keep her friend company. Alanna spotted a lone wolf that was stalking Megan’s sheep. Megan was terrified of the wolf and fired the pistol her father had loaned her to scare off the creature. She missed by a mile, the recoil surprised the poor girl and she dropped the pistol. The wolf, undaunted, continued his approach. Alanna swooped up the pistol, snatched the reload from Megan’s shaking hands, reloaded and fired.
Alanna seemed to gather the evening chill around her as she brought the gun to bear on the winter wolf. “Freeze!” she screamed, hoping by force of will she could get the animal to stay away. A crystal blue ray streaked from the muzzle of the pistol along with the icy bullet and slammed into the wolf, sending it to the ground.
Her parents were shocked and happy. Before this incident Alanna had shone no aptitude for magic, but here it was. Their daughter was a gun mage. It was almost unheard of in the family history. Most Morwyns were mages or sorcerers, but Alanna had always been different. It seemed to fit her well. Alanna’s parents allowed her to practice target shooting and some spellcraft under their watchful guidance, until they thought she was old enough to carry a gun herself. Alanna took what she had learned from her parents and apply it not only to her gun craft, but to her tinkering as well. She was ever trying to improve on things. When she wasn’t out shooting, you could find her trying to reinvent things to help the townsfolk.
At age 16 Alanna’s father began taking her away to court with him more often. Her years trekking around Loch Shir and the work she still liked to do around Lyningsgale gave Alanna the figure of an athlete. Her long blond hair, blue eyes and tanned complexion combined with the end of adolescence made Alanna almost an instant hit with the young nobleman at court. Alanna’s carefree and easy going country demeanor gave some young men the wrong impression, but when news that one young nobleman’s night ended with a pistol barrel shoved half way up his nose, most courtiers became extremely polite and courteous to the young lass from Loch Shir. It became fast apparent to Alanna that these trips to court had a purpose. She was very close to marriageable age and her father was looking for a suitable husband for her. This did not sit very well with Alanna and the ensuing fight with her father was said to be heard echoing across the Loch.
It only took a few “accidents” at court before Alanna’s father dropped the idea of marriage. Alanna spent a few more years at home before the Loch just got to small for her. Alanna’s trips to court had opened her eyes to the world and she wanted to see it. With her fathers permission Alanna signed up to attend Corvis University’s College of Engineering, to study Arcane Mechaniks. His parting gift to her was a beautifully crafted magelock pistol. It is her most cherished possession. She moved to Corvis two years ago and began her classes. It has been hard work for Alanna. She was never a good student, but her natural talent has helped keep her from failing out. Last year she helped defend her dormitory against one of the undead creatures let loose on the Longest Night. This brought her to the attention of professor Viktor Pendrake, a long time hero of hers. This semester when Viktor offered her a job working for him Alanna jumped at the chance. Not only would she be working for one of her heroes, it would get her away from some of her studies and hopefully get her some much needed excitement and exercise.
Alanna is 21 now. Her blonde hair is wavy and cut to just above shoulder length and her tanned complexion is a little paler now that she has to spend hours in study. While she remains in good shape, her time away from Loch Shir has given her a more curvaceous appearance as opposed to the wiry frame of a long distance runner. Alanna’s is still a carefree and generous young woman. She is friendly and outgoing with a mischievous glint to her blue eyes. In everyday ware she favors breeches and a bodice, opposed to a dress. Though like all young ladies she likes to dress up when she goes for a night out on the town. At all times she carries at least 2 pistols on her person, one of which is the magelock pistol her father gave her.
(Stats to come this weekend.)
Sorry if it is a little disjointed. I came up with most of this over my lunch hour today.
