True but this one is really easy to use unlike most of the others!

Why I say use excel is to perhaps make the Palm programming easier.

What I would like is the character sheet and the ability to track hitpoints. [/i]

Okay.

*Exactly* what do you mean by "the character sheet"? Listing of skills; feats; spells; etc., fine. HP tracking is easy, as is tracking any other similar thing. Tracking extensive mods - like spell effects, magic item effects, etc. - is hard. Having an area where you can enter whatever text you want is very easy, but not tremendously useful aside from notes and description.

Then there are those of us that don't have/want/understand spreadsheet programs... Much like the E-tools/Access 'issue' in a way.

It would actually make it harder, because it'd mean
a) making a permanent deal with whoever made the excel sheet (something I'm rather unlikely to do, for various reasons)
b) making an import-filter from the excel (actually, a rather pain-in-the-ass thing to do)
c) etc.

Palm OS excels at quick calculations, display, etc. It's somewhat cumbersome for data entry in large quantities.

The main thing to remember is that ease-of-use is paramount. Who would want to have to modify some XLS every time they want to change their character, when a few taps will do it?

Yes I meant list of skills, feats, items, hitpoints. The 'basics' I am not really after tracking spell effects or anything else like that.

Being able to update on the Palm would be good but I thought just reading from a file might be easier. Then maybe uploading to the pc with changes that were made in game.

Free text just for notes/descriptions would be good.

All in all I am not too worried about an auto calculating stuff just the ability to display a character sheet and the ability to modify it in game. Mind you, having the stat modifiers in the skills/weapons/saves section would be a nice touch.

So if you entered your rank and misc modifiers (feats etc) it would add your stat modifer and give a total.

How's that for a start?

Easy enough. ;)

The only part that's slightly complicated is having feats affect stuff (like skills, via Alertness or Skill Focus or whanot). It wouldn't actually be too hard if I hardcode it (i.e., have something in the Spot skill that asks if you have Alertness, vs. asking if you have "a feat that changes Spot"). I intend to have an individual "DM/Misc Mod" for everything, though, so if it's not noted automagically, you could just enter "+2 to spot" and it'd be added in. (Or "+2 to dex", which would change the dex bonus, in turn changing the skill total.)

Bah; I ramble.

So, how 'bout proposing something really challenging? :D

Really challenging? I would be happy with that to start with  Then after I used it for a bit I may know more. Which is a bit silly because then you would have to change heaps.
