With the Brachyurus...how would you redesign it? I like it more or less as is, but what type would it have? Would it be an outsider, akin to a legendary dire wolf?

Hey there dante dude! :)

Yes, legendary dire wolf would be the closest approximation.

I really don't like the design of the ELH Brachyurus, it contains a lot of my pet hates: size out of sync with physical hit dice, ridiculous ability scores that make no sense, not one original or interesting idea.

In the original 1st Ed. D&Dg, Garm is 12' at the shoulder which makes him Huge Size (with oversized jaws), whereas Fenris Wolf is 60' at the shoulder which makes him Colossal Size (potentially with oversized jaw? His head needs to be big enough to swallow Odin on Sliepnir).

I guess Garm could swallow whole a medium size creature? While Fenris could swallow whole a large size creature (assuming normal wolf-head proportions for the latter).

Hiya mate! :)

Claws, Howl, and Savage?

Are they worth +3 CR and +5 LA? Is that about right?

'Claws'?

Technically its claws should be dealing 1d8 damage, rather than 2d6...the text states their claws seem overly large for their bodies (even if the illustration doesn't show that). They don't have enough strength for +1 VSC, and they don't have the Improved Natural Attack feat.

Howl

Possibly +0.5 ECL.

Savage

+2.6 ECL or less, it has to hit and trip.

Answer: Very carefully. :)

(It's CR is probably wrong, but I think with fair warning and preparation a level 21 Party could beat it. I have seen similar level parties defeat a Hecatonchieres...)
