Impossible weapons

Spiked Chain. It has metal protrusions coming out of each link. So that the user would puncture his own hand. That is dumb. Banned in any game I GM.

Mercurial Weapons. A hollow tube filled with a lethal metal. Only someone that has NEVER actually used a sword would think of this... or someone that has no knowledge of how dangerous mercury is... Banned in any game I GM.

1) Gauntlets? But I agree, spiked chains are pretty stupid.

2) Magic?

Okay, I have a silly question: Where were these mentioned? I can't even begin to describe how unwieldy this could be, and how bloody heavy.

I think originally in the soft cover Fighter splat book that Wizards put out. I'm not sure where they are statted out now...

Doesn't the illustration in the PHB show a pair of large rings in the chain with no spikes? I always assumed that the wielder would hold the weapon by them. Not a very practical weapon from a realism standpoint, but fun anyway.

I just assume that the metal in the blade is supernaturally hardened and move on.

And if you hold the Spiked Chain by the central ring, the weapon no longer has reach. Which is fine by me. But the munchkins will hunt you down and beat you with their now non-reach Spiked Chains... :)

Just use a Weighted Chain. It has almost the same stats anyway...

As for the Mercurial weapons... if I saw someone weilding one... I would Sunder it immediately. I would then stand back and watch them die from Mercury poisoning... better than a hanging!

Hmm, I seem to remember two rings, but I don't have my PHB handy. Still, one could use gauntlets to hold the thing.

Unless the mercury sprayed out on you, of course. In any event, how do you tell a mercury weapon from a regular one? And are they any easier to sunder than normal weapons?

Too bad people don't die from mercury poisoning from just touching the stuff. This is the type of ignorance that you get from gov't schooling. When I was a kid, I'd roll it around in my hand. Nothing happened. Only from longterm exposure to vapors or from getting it actually IN you (through a cut or through swallowing it) is it going to do any serious damage.

Actually you can absorb it through your skin. By rolling it around your palm you probably took in some. You most likely have a much higher level of mercury in your system than is really healthy. Mercury is dangerous. The last place I'd want it is inside the weapon I am holding...

Unless the length of spiked chain from the ring is 10', it isn't going to have reach.

Mercurial weapons have a tube running down their length. That is going to make them look a lot different than a normal sword for example. You might hide the fact a mace was Mercurial more easily. But I think a trained warrior might still notice it.

They are made of tubes remember. Which would be easier to Sunder than a sword with a solid blade.
