Increasing the number of feats a player recieves...

Greetings all!

Haven't posted in a bit, but I thought I start with throwing out a house rule I'm considering, and have you all chomp down on it for size.

With all the new feats that have been introduced since the release of 3E, it has become evident to myself and others I've played with, that the number of feats the average character recieves pales in comparison to their options. With our style of play, character attributes and skills are more important to the roleplaying and fun of the game, than hunting for some magic item. As such, I've revised the standard rate at which characters recieve feats.

To begin, all characters recieve two feats for 1st level instead of one. (Yes, humans still gain another feat on top of this one, as do fighters and wizards.) However, one of these feats is restricted to "trait" feats. (Specialized list... think ancestrial feats from OA. Feats that one might have from birth like Amberdex. or Alertness.) From there, all characters recieve additional feats at levels: 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 15, 17 & 20.

Overall, all characters would recieve 3 more feats over the course of 20 levels. Only one of which is restricted. Not meant to be a power gamer change. Again, you'd have to play our games, but gear comes and goes quite frequently, and magic items and gold are not common in the slightest. (One game had party of five, 9th level characters who had stubbled across a total of maybe 12 magic items... most potions.)

Anyone else out there do anything like this?

I have a better (IMO) solution that might be a little more balanced. At 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, and 20th a character normally get an additional ability point. My system allows you to take a feat in place of this ability point, but you cannot do this twice in a row. Example.. if you took a feat at 4th instead of increasing an ability score, you cannot take a feat at 8th in exchange for a point, but could do so again at 12th.

i think this is an excellent idea.

One of the mistakes of 3E, IMO, is the drastic few number of feats that a normal character gets.

Since feats were the main way they designed 3E PC's to be unique from each other, to only have 2 feats before 6th level for most PC's (non-fighter, non-human) unneccessarily restricts the player from getting the enjoyment out of the game that he/she could.

As long as the extra feats aren't all "power feats", there shouldn't even be a balance issue.
Many feats are just not that powerful, or even affect the game that much.

AS long as you use this not only for the PCs, but NPCs as well it shouldn't unbalance anything.

EXACTLY!! That is what makes my game work. If all NPCs and Monsters are rebuilt with powergaming in mind, the campaign isn't "munchkin", it's "Extreme"... I like the sound of that:D...

Extreme gaming. I think we just invented a counter culture to our little counter culture. :D

House rules for feats

I use the house rule for character feats that a character recieves a feat every odd level. I have found this rule to work well.
