Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

If the movie is set in South America, why did the production film for 2 months in New Mexico? Not much in New Mexico looks like South America,

They've been filming for months in Hawaii, so it should be jungletastic.

I'm not terribly excited about crystal skulls, to put it mildly, but I'm jonesing for Dr. Jones.

Or so it's been claimed. Last I heard, they werent letting anyone examine it. (Although I believe the claim isnt that they dont know how they did it, it's that it wasnt done with modern/metal tools. The usual claim I've seen is that it was polished over the course of 300 years after rough carving) We might get different results if it were studied under more open conditions.
