My wife and I have this debate occasionally. She's says my family is "unique" and I tell her that hers is.
When I moved out after college, I bought my Aunt's old furniture. I think I paid $500 for the lot of it, and it included a chair, a couch, a dining room table, a leather reclining office chair, even a rudimentary drafting table, and some rather cheap metal end tables and coffee tables.
My wife told me I was crazy - "family members don't sell stuff to each other, they give it to you." she says. In her family, if it was her aunt, her aunt would have said, "I've got this furniture, I want you to have it."
My brother-in-law offered to sell me a microwave for $45 since he doesn't need it, and knows that I will when I get my apartment until I can get my wife moved to Virginia in a month. My wife balked, of course. I didn't offer to buy it from. I'll let him try to find room for it in his apartment, and when he decides he doesn't need two (he's moving back from an apartment he telecommutes from in Norfolk) he'll offer to give it to me, or at least just let me use it for a month until I get my own.
But, I'm curious - in your family, is it typical to offer to sell you things, or is it more typical to offer to just give you things?
