Initiate of Draconic Die step Q

I feel like such a noob not being able to find this or simply for not knowing it, but I was building an unarmed character that will gain die step increases on damage as per Initiate of the Draconic Mysteries.

The initial examples make sense, 1d3 -> 1d4, a normal step in size increase, but 1d8 -> 1d10 isn't quite the same.

I'm curious if this isn't just a damage # increase? ie 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 6 -> 8 -> 10 -> 12 -> 20 or how does this work exactly?

The DMG (page 28) & MM (page 291) both have tables for increasing damage dice. They both list that 1d8 upgrades to 2d6. I'd go with that (IIRC, 1d8 to 1d10 was 3.0, but it got revised with 3.5).
