D&D General Instead of Steed

They could just let them summon a celestial/fey/fiend ally with roughly the same stats as the celestial steed, but let them change the size to something appropriate. The biggest benefit of the steed is likely increased movement because according to the spell they don't attack and if the caster is incapacitated they defend. It's not particularly powerful. Another option would be to simply let them cast expeditious retreat instead.

I was also thinking of a follower/squire to aid him. It would help you as well to be able to feed information into the game.

Another thought is a summoned warrior to help in a fight. I gave an item of a modified horn of Valhalla after reading the Drizzt book where it happens to the battlerager dwarf. Instead of summoning a bunch of warriors, it summons just one. A bit like a follower, but only comes out in a fight and the player can control it like a summoned monster.

Isn't that more powerful than summon steed? The steed has an ability they can use once per day and they act as a mount. They don't attack or act on their own.

Pathfinder has a cool option of allowing paladins to invest power into their weapon (via a celestial spirit), rather than gaining a mount.

I is more powerful since you are adding a combat helper. If it is half the level the paladin is, it will not add much and less still the higher in level you go. I does not add to exploration or anything out of combat. That may may things more equal in terms of power.

New ability: Remove-Stick-From-Butt.

@AlViking 's Retreat option is good. It's not, by the way, too late to look to Santa for paladin-like inspiration. I'm guessing Summon Sleigh is out, but temporary darkvision might be cool. I just can't picture a D&D character who's not into mounts. Who wants to walk?
